Help using the Repair console Windows XP

Recently had a BSOD which has caused my machine to not boot due to a missing or corrupt file:

    C:\Windows\System32\Config\System

I've been prompted by the error message to try and use the repair feature, but i have no knowledge of repair console, and im not entirely sure thats the right thing to be using.

Formatting is something i would really rather avoid seeing as i have a lot of media on the drive that id like to keep hold of.

A step by step would be much appreciated.
