    Windows Mail High cpu usage.

    Vista 32bit, winmail.exe is causing high cpu usage, when doing any kind of minimal activity in windows mail. For example, if I highlight one message, it all freezes and turns white (as you would expect when something is frozen ).

    This seemed to start happening since update KB931768 was installed, so i uninstalled it, and voila, success.

    Later on, vista decided to redownload the update and stuff it up again.

    Anyone have a work around or a fix?

    Thanks.

    Everything i've read suggests that this is a definite Microsoft problem. Definitely effecting too many people for it to be anything apart from them messing it up.

    Can you change the way updates are installed? i.e. you have to approve them before they can be installed?

    You should be able to block the update from installing using windows update. I dont remember exactly(back on XP for the mo). But uninstall it, let it find it again, select the option to view the updates before installed, uncheck it from the list and a pop up will ask whether to never show it again, check that and it wont install again.

    Uninstalled the update, set vista to notify me before installing any updates, it installed the update without asking again

    Not sure if it works with vista (it should, but hey, it's ms);

    Unistall (yet again), go to start, windows update, so IE opens on the update page.

    On the left of the page, click on 'check for updates, it should now tell you which updates are available. Find KB931768 , select it, then select the check box to tell it not to use this update.

    There will be some diif steps in the above, due to my memory and diff in vista, but this should sort it out for you.

    I did that the first time and it installed and restarted the pc without any warning.

    Using the other way, where you tell vista to notify me, it didnt shut down, but it still installed the update.

    Bloody thing

    OK, let's try it the other way round (not sure if you can do it this way);

    Leave the KB931768 update installed, now go to the update site in IE (don't think you can use other browsers), get it to display your update history.

    This is where I'm not sure, see if you can highlight KB931768, and , maybe right click, tell it to remove/uninstall and leave off your pc.

    There has to be a way to do this, but you are right, bloody things

    Hope this helps.

    You can untick it, but then ok is greyed out.

    Now, I uninstall it and before I have had chance to restart, it has reinstalled it again

    What about changing yor preferences from automatically download and install, to notify of updates.

    Unistall, again, it should then tell you that there is an update (KB931768) and ask what you want to do. You (may) now be given the oppurtunity of telling MS that you don't want to install this update, ever.

    If that works, change your update prefs back to how you want them, and it will now know not to install KB931768.
