    WinXP 64 Feedback?

    I am really thinking of upgrading to WinXP 64. Mainly just to be able to get more RAM in my system, and hopefully get a performance boost. Will be mainly using CAD/rendering packages.

    Apart from making sure I have 64bit drivers for all hardware, is there anything else I need to look out for? Hoping for some feedback from any winxp 64 users.

    Will it be worthwhile or will the performance increase be un-noticeable?

    Oh, and last question. Not all of the CAD software I use is 64bit. Can I still install x86 based software on the 64bit operating system.

    Many thanks.

    yes you can install 32bit applications onto xp64, infact windows manages this split quite well.

    How much ram do you have now - are you using all your ram, do you find ram a bottleneck, how intensive is the work you do, is your CPU reasonably fast.

    The answer to these questions will determine if you see any performance increase.
    It is Inevitable.....

    Ok, slightly confusing as I am in the middle of upgrading components.

    Current PC:
    DFI NF3 UT Lanparty Socket 754
    Athlon64 3200+ Newcastle Core
    1.5gb DDR Ram (3 x 512mb pc3500)
    256mb Quadro FX 4000 AGP

    Got these current parts which I'll be upgrading to in the next week or so:
    ASRock 4CoreDUAL-VSTA
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    2gb DDR2 PC5300 (2 x 1gb)
    256mb Quadro FX 4000 AGP

    I use 3D parametric modelling software, SolidEdge, I-Deas along with nurb surface modelling, AliasStudiotools, Rhino. And also alot of rendering using Imagestudio and 3DStudio Max.

    I have definitely seen an increase in performance since I got my Quadro FX 4000 card. But still suffering from slowdowns when rendering, also when applying shaders on models while working on them.
    I have read that CAD packages are very ram intensive. The more the better.

    Oh, I should also add that I am running dual monitors at 1920 x 1200 resolution each.

    well as the real benifit of 64 bit computing kicks in at 4 gig of ram or applications which use long registers, I doubt you'll see any benifit from xp64

    I should add that I would add another 2gb ram upon a successful install of Winxp 64 and having a stable running system.

    seems a totally backward way of doing things.

    got a system that doesn't benifit from 64bit, so upgrade the system to another none 64bit benifitting system, get that all stable and working - then buy more ram ???

    just do what you want as your changing the goal posts when its clear your post is

    "Hi,

    I want to move to XP 64 can someone vindicate me"

    If your looking at the 64bit world, you may as well go to vista

    The majority of the software I use is not compatible with vista. So that pretty much rules out vista.

    I agree that my posts are slightly unclear. How about this:

    The main usage of my PC is for CAD software and applications which are highly dependent on the amount of ram available in ones computer. However due to the limitations of 32bit operating systems, I can not really go above 3gb.

    Apart from the initial preparations of ensuring that I have 64bit drivers for all of my hardware, are there any other underlying factors I may have overlooked which other users of this forum could share from their experiences with winxp 64?

    Thanks.

    xp-64 is more buggy than vista-64, and most manufacturers are concentrating on making vista drivers x64 etc instead of some for xp. unless you got all your drivers and software working on xp-64 then its fine. my linksys wireless card couldnt install. i couldnt run a lineage2 client etc. it wasnt promoted alot so it doesnt seem like an os a home user would have.

    I installed XP 64 and all my hardware was supported with 64 bit drivers. The overwhelming majority of applications worked no problem, just a few issues with software such as the samsung suit for managing my phone.

    I uninstalled it due to desperately needing to use a scanner which was not supported. I got it free through MSDN through uni (thankyou sheffield hallam) so no harm done

    Just add, XP 64 absoulutely flies!

    i dont see no point in me using it seeing as i have 2gb of ram, or anyone else with less than 4gb of ram. unless you run x64 bit apps or a server then its not worth having the hassle of the minor software/driver issues. it would be excellent if most of the drives were updated for it too. maybe i'll probably consider it or vista ( ) when i get the next upgrade. lets hope ram prices keep dropping

    Thanks to all for their experiences. Much appreciated. I'm getting the general pattern that if drivers are sorted, you pretty much will be ok with regards to everything else.

    only issues for me are that:
    printer not supported - so got hold of third party enthusiast driver;
    sound card was not supported for 6 months - and now no updates are coming out for XP 64;
    flash does not like IE7 on XP 64;
    occasional downloads don't work;
    I stupidly didn't install a virus checker for a long while when AVG wouldn't work - got Avast in the end, but only after infection.

    I've got to replace the boot HDD soon and I'll probably go back to XP ordinaire just 'cos of IE7 and flash. Although I seem to remember that the licence for my XP got superceded with the XP 64 free upgrade.

    I'm using XP x64 and it feels more responsive than 32bit XP.

    I got that as well. Dunno if its just a perception, but it did seem a tad quicker than xp32
