    Allocation Unit Size

Is there a way to change this without reformatting the drive?

I use my main machine to store avi's and then play them downstairs on my shuttle but it seems that MCE takes an age to bring up the folder listings, the only thing that has changed bar windows updates on both machines is the fact that the new drive I moved all my files too has a different unit size, I set it to 4096 instead of default which while it may improve transfer rates on the main machine seems to have had an adverse effect on the machines viewing over the network..

    Acronis DiskDirector can do it.

It even analyses your disk to see what cluster sizes would give you the best efficiency.

Yeah but things like that tell you what the best efficiency would be for the drive locally, not remotely..
