    HDD Cloning

Im about to change my windows os HDD from an 80gb SATAII to a 160gb SATAII and really dont want to be reinstalling Vista and all my programs. The 80gb will then be formatted and probably sold.

-Whats the best program out there to clone my current os drive to the new one?
-I know Norton Ghost is popular, but is there a specific version i need? Does itwork in Vista?
-Clonezilla is a shareware version that does something simialr I believe?
-I take it these programs clone everything, so theres no registry issues when I run my os programs on the new drive?

Any hints, tips, tricks or guides would also be useful

All the cloning threads I found via search are from 2005, bar one.

EDIT: Looks like Norton Ghost might not be able to clone Vista. Any other options??

You'll want Acronis True Image 10 Home

Beats any Ghost version I've used into cocked hat. Wonderful for both home and business use. Hexus have a review of it here if you need further convincing. The best option is probably to create a bootable CD rather than doing it within Windows itself... which I've never actually tested. Use the validate option if it's presented to you - may take longer but it will give you peace of mind. Consider using the old hard drive for backups. If you use the highest possible compression option it should all fit on there even if/when the new drive is filled up towards capacity.

I don't know of a free equivalent, but I'm sure there'll be some out there.

Acronis TI is a damned good product, but I wouldn't write off Ghost 12.0 - Symantec have pulled an ace out of the hat with it.

'dd' would be the free 'equivalent', but it's a bit daunting for the first time user. Although a new hard drive would be a good excuse/operatunity to start with a fresh install and clear out the cruft.

I haven't tried, although I imagine the basic partition elements of the FS remain the same.

If you must copy ure data across like this Acronis is a really nice product if you got the money

If not, boot into a linux live cd and use dd

But the best way is to re-install windows on the new hdd then copy all ure music, docs etc to the new drive from within windows

then u'll get a nice clean install with all your data. Sorted

I noticed you use a Maxtor and this should fit the bill and costs nothing.

use acronis true image to clone your hard drive to the new one.
Then take out your current 80gb hard drive and re-insert your 160gb into the old sata cable that was in the old hd.
Windows will boot up as if nothing had ever happened, with all registry and everything totally transferred. Windows wont even know anything happened apart from it showing the extra free space.

Thanks for that, Ill look into it. I used Maxblast 3 years ago! My Maxtors are just backup drives. My main drive is a Samsung Spinpoint and that other it a Hitachi.
