Is it possible to...... (MCE Query)

Have my second PC access my main PC (which records TV) from within MCE to retrieve the recorded TV on the main PC and playback on the second PC? If so, how?

Would the second PC be picked up as an extender or do I just point it to the folder on my main PC using the 'watch' option in MCE on the second machine.

My main PC is listed on the left, the second one would be a much lower spec (AMD Duron). Over a 802.11g wireless network.

Main PC is running Vista Ultimate, second would run XP MCE 2005. Main PC is linked via wireless to the router which is in the office.

I just want the second machine to boot straight into MCE when it starts up, so I only have to use my remote i.e. no keyboard or mouse

I've appended the title for you.

I dont have much experience with MCE , so I'm afraid I can't help much there.

if your 2nd unit was an xbox 360 for example would it work in the same way ?

Not sure how this will help me set up MCE?

I made the title like that to be more appealing to people. If you hover over any thread you get the first few sentences so I figured people would do that and then decide whether to open and read.

I haven't tried this but in Vista>Media Centre> Settings> Library setup you can monitor folders so it should work for network shared folders and there should be something similar for XP MCE 2005, theres also a setting for booting staright into media centre

Well it was daft - he had a point The only reason I read this thread at all was because the title got edited to MCE and i'm interested in that thar thing

Anyway.. One way to do it would be to setup a shared drive (mapped network drive) and tell the second PC's MCE that this is where it should keep it's recorded TV. That way it'll 'think' that the recorded TV on the main PC is it's own, and display them in recorded tv accordingly. Just a thought.

you should be able to map the drive on your first pc and get mce to monitor it for you. that should not be a problem.

Other PCs cannot be extenders currently (there was an internal beta of this though).

Basically you could map network shares as said, and view all content.

What you will lose verses running a proper extender (like an xbox 360) is the ability to view live TV, or set recordings etc from the remote box.

TBH an xbox 360 as an extender is pretty unbeatable (and I say this as a tivo zealot!)
