    slow logon

    i've recently developed a problem with windows xp, when i start up the pc it auto logs on, which is all fine till i get to desktop msn messenger and the wifi icon dont appear, clicking on my computer will show the little torchlight searching for the drives etc. pressing ctrl alt del shows all the processes running, but with no credentials (User Name bar). I run a new task off task manager and watch a video for 5 minutes till everything loads. no viruses or spyware etc. but im still scanning till i find one. has anyone had this problem before? or know how to fix it?

    thanks in advance.

    Check that there is not any hardware that is not installed properly in Device Manager, go run> msconfig > startup and check there is not anything starting that shouldn't.

    I've noticed this increasingly on some PCs at work too (network icons and such popping along late), so I imagine it's an XP patch somewhere along the line. It only delays things for perhaps 10-20 seconds here, so it's not something which bothers me. Might not be the same thing given the exaggerated nature of your problem.

    This happened to me and found out the driver for my wacom tablet took ages to start up taking like 2/3 minutes to get going, did you install anything recently?

    nope, its usually fast to logon. but suddenly now everytime it takes time to give the processes credentials. it happened once before but a quick restart fixed it.

    If there's no or limited hard drive thrashing, then I expect it's network related. Any mapped drives?

    well, only virutalbox drives. but its always disconnected unless i open virtualbox. (virtualbox = virtualization soft)
    so not really any drives.

    Tried disabling the virtual controllers in device manager? I really don't think it's gonna make any difference, but it's worth a shot.

    I have the same problem on X64. My RaLink WiFi drivers appear to be part of the issue.

    During this time my process list doesn't show any user info. Very odd.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Yeah i've seem this problem on a few computers. Must be an XP bug as I could not find any commonality between the two systems.

    So you either re-format or wait for a MS patch. Could be a good long wait though

    Could be worth looking in the application logs to see if anything fails on start-up.

    If nothing seems out of place, you could look for the applications which appear to be taking a long time to load and see if a service is started by it on start-up (like the wifi thing)

    You could try disabling it on startup, and then starting manually, but i suppose it depends on how integral the wifi is to your pc use.

    nope, it seemed to stop when i took my mp3 player out so i tried to see if that affected it but it didnt either. also since my mobo broke i've swapped it for another mobo and therefore my old gfx card as well and it seems my wireless card is there 2 times, well only one visible. it was installed as the card and now its the same name with a #2 next to it. maybe the install fixed it?
