Red face What have I done - and how?!

Um, right folks, didn't know this was possible, but I now have 2 WinXP Pros on the same drive

I'd spent some time (and CDs) trying to slipstream SP2 and make the CD bootable. Having succeeded, then tried Fred Langa's non-destructive total rebuild.

Somewhere in the procedure I went wrong and XP installed to C:\WINDOWS.0, giving me a boot option as well (this is a nuisance as it delays boot and, if ignored, boots to the wrong XP). The original XP is alive and 'well'.

Now, as I've managed to ignore my mantra of 'if you can't fix it don't break it' and Plan B isn't yet, er, a plan, any ideas on how to uninstall the second OS, please? Apart from anything else, it's taking up 1.14GB (about a Gig less than updating to SP2, so A Good Thing© for future use.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

You should be able to sort out which one it's booting to easy enough. Right click on 'My Computer' and click 'Properties' (or Control Panel -> System), then go to the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Startup and Recovery' click 'Settings'. Change 'Default Operating System' to the other one and reduce the timeout to speed it up a bit.

As for removing it, a hack job would be just deleting all the files. You might need a format and reinstall to get rid of all of it though Anyone know any tricks to clean it up? Operating systems don't really uninstall gracefully..

personally instead of trying to fix it, i would backup any data (or make a ghost image to be sure) then reformat.

i think you can edit boot.ini and remove the offending boot option but i would go with my above suggestion.

Thank you for the suggestions - I didn't know about the choice of OS, as I'd never seen more than 1 in there.

Anyway, once I stopped goggling and started Googling for the correct terms, came across a useful item on MS' site; after some strong tea to recover...

Just deleted Windows.0 and rebooted, choosing the OS I wanted, then found a site that properly explained the Boot.ini layout. Bit of editing - typing with all fingers crossed isn't easy - and I'm back to square 0 now.:-)

    Cheers,

    Peter.
