    Is explorer dieing at some point? If it does then it'll reload, and the systray might only repopulate with icons that refresh themselves.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Run Task Manager, end task Explorer, then go to Run>Explorer.exe. If they come back then you know it was explorer being funny.

    If not, right click on the task bar, and uncheck auto hide icons, or for the programs mentioned, set them to always show...

    It sounds like a program is starting with the system that is causing the conflict.

    Try safe mode and see if you get the same.
    If not, try removing programs from your startup list (use msconfig) until you find the culprit.

    You could also try the system file checker
    -start
    -run
    -sfc /scannow

    (you may need an xp disk)

    This will scan your system files to check for any (significant) changes, and will (if you agree) revert them back to their original state.

    Could also be the apps not running at start up anymore.

    I would say it is this, you can turn on winamps auto-load feature in the options menu ( I think its Winamp Agent )

    EDIT: For the sound icon problem try:
    Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices (May have to enable classic menu) then select "Place volume icon in the taskbar"

    Hopefully that will fix that problem.
