    How Easy Is It....

    Right, question 1.

I'm off to my uncles on friday for a family get together now he's got one pc and a laptop that the family use the only problem is none of them are what you call "tech savy" so there current xp install on both machines is well over 6~7yrs old.As a result it takes near 10mins to get logged in as they have that much crap on them.

Now the laptop (fujitsu) and desktop (packard bell) both have oem installs on them how hard will it be to do a fresh install with a copy of xp-home on bth of the machines would I run into any complications regarding drivers and such or should it be relativly straightforward???

I'm taking my lanbox with me so I can plug it into the network to use as a backup drive so Ill have all my software aswell.

it will work with a XP cd if you have one,

but remember you wont have any drivers at all, you will need to get them all off manafacturers websites, motherboards, gfx card, software, prehipherals, everything unless they have any CD's whatsover

You will also need their login/email details, so remember to ask if the know them.

Backing up their work data may also be difficult if they have it scatter-gunned all over the disk (I just had a relatives laptop with photos all over the place, nightmare).

other than that it shouldn't be too differcult.

Should be easy. Just take your time to find all the documents they want to back up.

Ensure you write down the info in device manager if you dont know exactly whats installed component wise. It'll make it easier to find drivers if you have any problems.

depends if your XP-Home CD is compatible with their OEM license key.
    It is Inevitable.....

Doesnt matter about that as I've got two xp home cds that Ive got complete with discs (been stocking up for when its no longer advailable), I've got everest on a flash drive so I should be able to find out what chip sets, lan and audio they've got and I know for a fact they've got it "scatter gunned" everywhere.

What he means is that if, for example, it's a Dell, then you might well need an original XP disk from Dell. Not all keys work with all OEM CDs.

Ah right, fair enough. Just thought you had the CDs.

Try to use the existing key if you can though - there's still a half-decent chance it may work (some of our HP licenses work with a standard disk) - it would be a shame to essentially lose a license if you don't need to.

Only other thing would be to double check you have all the drivers first before wiping. Device Manager is normally enough.
