    Xubuntu or Ubuntu?

have ubuntu fiesty installed and its very nice.seeing as Xubuntu is supposed to be alot less resource hungry right? i have no problem at all resource wise with my machine (1gb ram 2.3overclocked xp 9600xt) but surely if i run kubuntu it would give me better performance under wine with games like cs source etc...
and in reflection to anything else that hogs resources...
    just a random thought really.

why would a kde desktop give you better performance under wine ?

ubuntu and kubuntu are the same product with a different desktop.

It's a matter of personal preference. I found KDE much nicer and pretty out of the box but plumped for Ubuntu as I found it easier to get Beryl and all it's natty 3D effects working. Ubuntu also seemed to be slightly more stable than Kubuntu but that might have just been me.

ok - why would xubuntu give you better performance under wine ?

And why do you care about lighter resources when you say you're fine for resources.

I got CSSource going under Ubuntu/Wine on a xp-m 2500, 1.5Gb DDR400, 9800pro but the framerates were about half those seen in Windows ... and those weren't that great to begin with! Didn't get around to trying the "official" ATI drivers so would be interested to hear how you fare with a 9600xt and if there's a big difference with other drivers for the ATI cards

I'm told nvidia cards perform much better under linux, ...so next card's going to be nvidia methinks!

the fact that your running windows programs under essenatially an emulation technique is the problem with performance. Nothing else.

    fglrx is a bigger culprit

well the ati drivers are a known issue and has been said in many of keefs post so he should know that by now.

Couple it with running it under a form of emulation and well, its just a heap of crap.

i care because the less resources i can use the more free there is to allocate to other processes? at least thats what i assume?
so correct me if I'm wrong if i had more resources to allocate to the emulator it would make it run smoother - obviously my gfx card is the main culprit to the fps but the allocated ram and cpu useage free'd (spelling sorry) up from using less os resources should improve the overall smoothness of the emulator? bar the mentioned fps hit from the ati card over a nvidia?
so in short... if i use less I've more to give to other app's such as an emulator which as we know require cpu/ram usage aswell as the gfx card... so the more i have to give the emulator/app the smoother it preforms right?

sorry for the misconfusion and wording i'm quite tired.sorry if its jibberish.

oh and by the way its not a driver problem as since using a clean ubuntu 7.0.4 format its worked nice in wine out of the box with the default drivers and resolution problems etc that i had before don't occur now all out of the box. i would just like css to play abit smoother
hl and everything else is nice though

your still using an emmulator with poor graphics drivers, no ammount of ram or cpu will compensate for that.

If your considering swapping your whole ubuntu desktop for xfce to get better play time in Counter Strike, then surly you may as well keep ubuntu how you like it with gnome and just dual boot to windows for the odd game.

Or if your main goal is gaming, use windows full stop.

Or get faster hardware knowing you will see a performance hit compared to windows. Seems like a waste though, here's hoping linux can take more ground and attract more attention on the gaming front, though I have my doubts...
