    xp or vista?

    hello,
its a shame this fourm doesnt have an option for a poll.
for your next pc will you get vista or will you get windows xp again?
    and why?
just think windows xp is a very stable OS and all the software works with it.
vista has quite a few sofware that dont.
also quite a few games dont work on vista.
and if im not mistaken SLI doesnt work on vista eiether.
im hoping to get a new pc for xmas and it will be hard for me to choose.
do i choose the proven stable and compatible XP or do i choose the new OS which isnt compatible with all software yet?
if you building the pc yourself the oem price for XP home is £64 and vista home premium is £75.
    so only £10 difference

Not used XP at home (use it at work) or vista don't intend to get a new PC soon so no comment on what I would choose next.

Food for thought: vista supports DX10, XP supports up to DX9 so if you're a gamer it may be something to consider - unless MS changes it's mind on DX10 support for XP.

BTW the 'new thread page' does allow you to create a poll the option is near the bottom of the page - But I have never used it.

Next PC will come with Vista because i'm buying a laptop. I'll play around with it for a while and if i don't like it, i'll chuck an XP license i have on it.

I guess i'll be lucky as the laptop will be designed for Vista so i won't have any driver isues. I can't think of any hardware i have at the moment that won't work with it either.

I've purchased both (part of last months googlecheckout bonanza) Not had a chance to install either but I used XP pro at work and I've got XP64 on my gaming rig.

I'm looking to try triple-bootup alongside the latest SUSE (Any tips on this would be great)

BTW Xmas is half a year away and in technology terms thing'll change a lot. XP will still be stable and most likely to have Service pack 3 and Vista will most likely gain much more or a footing with drivers and stability. (Think of XP when it first came to light with Win 98 in full swing)

Ikonia's right though. Only reason not to go Vista for a home machine is if there is something that you have that your company has not sorted drivers for it.

SLI not working on vista you are having a laugh right?. Sure that was the case back in beta 2, but i'm fairly certain i can say with confidence that these issues where sorted ages ago.

Vista is the future, buying XP now to go on a brand new system unless you have something legacy is just being scared of the unknown

If I get my next PC in the next 2 years, perhaps 18 months I'll stick with XP. After that I reckon Vista should be pretty much sorted and ready to replace XP properly not to mention that uptake rates for Vista should be increasing by then otherwise MS are in trouble.

Just a slight problem with that, in that if the rumors are true service pack 3 is being dropped for xp and support will be dropped in 2008, so that microsoft can focus on vista.

If they do Ill still keep xp, as everything I've seen from vista offers me no extra features I'm happy with xp and I really dont want to give it up but I have a feeling microsoft is going to force people to move to vista and like the next man I dont like being forced.

On a seperate note I have a valid vista home basic key (oem) is there anyway I can get the software from anywhere either for free or at a slight cost. IE under £10.

Contact Microsoft, they should be able to provide you with some media for a handling and shipping fee.

Well thats the one on the website. You should be able to get them to transfer you to the right department from there.

Or use one of the numbers off SayNoTo0870.com, just search for Microsoft.
