Does anyone have the link, or even the phone number, for Microsoft support dealing with invalid product keys.
My key is from XP, and I'm using a new XP SP2 disk for a clean install.....but it won't take the original serial.
Thanks

Don't some of the large OEMs have their own keys too? for instance i don't think a generic OEM disk will work with a Dell number and vice versa.
COuld be wrong on that, but i'm sure i read that somewhere (probably here)
LOL. Just posted this in another thread.
This should see you right though.
0870 60 10 100

Well thats the one on the website. You should be able to get them to transfer you to the right department from there.
Or use one of the numbers off SayNoTo0870.com, just search for Microsoft.

is this what your looking for:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;883254
Or:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310637/en-us
this is the MS UK number, not specific to keys though 0870 60 10 100
edit: ^yep that number :/
MS Support tells me that although both disks are OEM and XP professional, the serial number won't work. I have to use the original disk provided by the manufacturer (it was a bought system through Holly Computers, now deceased).
Is this right? I can see how a serial number can be tied to a hardware configuration, but how can a cd installation of an OS be specific to a serial number?

I was originally trying to use a recent OEM copy of XP SP2 I bought for my new build, but that didn't work.
I'm now trying to use the original disks provided by Holly Computers when they built the original pc, but using BartPE to streamline the SATA drivers into place.
Just out of interest, how do people use ordinary XP discs to install XP onto new builds with SATA drives? Do they all use PEBuilder?

nLite normally.
That's what I thought! Is it just RAID? But boot recognises the disks, so how come XP install needs SATA drivers streamlined onto the disk?

IT doesn't need it streamlined onto the disk. You can do it via floppy disk and f6.
Thats not going to help you with an OEM key attached to a previous disk.
TiG
Or when you don't have a floppy disk drive....
I'm just suprised that OEM disks are locked to certain keys....I wouldn't have thought that a producer the scale of Holly would have that kind of influence.

from what i have read you can use a USB stick in place of a floppy drive for the RAID drivers
