Vista - falling at the first hurdle :(

Well I decided to make the most of my MSNDN-AA registration and got myself a copy of Vista (business). And to cut a long story short I can't install it. Here's a run down of how it went:

Booted the CD - please wait
    Wait a while
    Have dinner
Prompt for language settings - set to English UK and click go
    Please wait
Try on a shirt and tie, the fit's a bit baggy but it should be fine
    Still waiting
    Give my mum a lift
Sort out the car stereo (been in the garage for a new clutch and needed the code to unlock it)
Can't find drivers - click to try looking again
    Wait a long time
    Still can't find drivers
    Click browse
Wait a long time, no folders show up
Give up and click X and quit.

Now through all the complaining about a lack of drivers, it never said what for! I'm completely at a loss of where to start and am wondering whether to just go back to XP.

System: WinFast N570SM2AA mobo, X2 3800+, 2gig crucial ram, Radeon 7000 PCI graphics (will go shopping soon...), Seagate sata hdd, Sony/NEC dvd-rw.

There's no excess things in there to unplug to see if one of them is the problem. It's a fairly stardard nForce 570 SLI chipset on the mobo and I'm not using raid or anything silly in bios (hardly touched the bios).

Anyone know where I should start? Thanks!

What drivers can't it find? Any indication? Certainly (when it works) a Vista install shouldn't take longer than 30mins.

Sometimes the normal Windows XP drivers work perfectly on Vista.

For my sound I just installed the usual drivers off the motherboard's website (it didn't say anything about Vista compatibility on the drivers).

Wish I knew what it was looking for It's very early on in the install process so maybe it could be looking for a storage controller driver? But without raid and the hdd and dvd drive on the standard onboard controller it really shouldn't be an issue.

Maybe a bios update would help, I'll take a look and see what is around. Something clearly isn't right though, guess I'll try Ubuntu and make sure everything works properly...

You put a new disk and as part of the install process you formatted the drive? or haven't you got that far?

The disk in has a copy of XP on the first partition and some files on the second (all backed up). I was hoping that Vista wasn't a step back and that I'd be able to format and install to the first partition...

Never got that far though, lol Cheers

Sounds like you're installing from booting off the disc - have you tried running the installer from within WindowsXP too? Did you actually get to the stage where it asked you where you wanted to install it? Did you do a 'custom' install or a normal one?

    BIOS update always advisable.

Wahay, and we're away! I updated the bios and disabled the jmicron storage controller (second unused IDE channel and e-SATA). Seems to be coming along nicely now.

Bios update was a chore, I ended up burning a bootable CD as I only had 768k floppy disks around!

37% Expanding files and counting. I wonder how the Radeon 7000 PCI will cope with Aero...

And my next thread will be which graphics card...

    Thanks everyone!

    I don't think a 7000 will handle Aero at all :/

    It wouldn't at all.

The list on the ATi/AMD website Here shows all the devices capable of running vista and the aero interface.
