    Question Firefox

    hi2all
I use windows internet explorer for the net but i have heard of an alternative called firefox. The person that told me about it said it was brilliant, but I would like more info and opinions before I even think of trying it. So if there is anyone out there that knows anything about it (good or bad) i would b gratefull for the heads up.

Its free, just download and try it. It takes a bit of getting used to, but is much better than IE.

You can run as many internet browsers as you like so download Firefox and have a play with it. I am a FF fan.

Keep things simple to start with and as you get used to it you can then start to change some of the setting for how various windows and tabs open.

It has many ways to customise the interface via add-ons called themes , but more importantly has a huge array of bolt on options called extensions that you can download to make surfing easier.

e.g. Split Browser - allows you to split a single screen as many times as you like - very handy if you need to compare prices for shopping etc https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4287

Don't forget adblock (add-on), it can slow down page loading times if you have a slow PC, but it blocks lots of adverts.
Mouse gestures 1.5.2 is very handy.

I can't think of anything bad about firefox, but i can't think of much i hate about IE (only the new UI, why did they move the home key??).

I don't know how much truth there is in this website

A few things i changed in my config:

Type about:config (in the URL bar)
    (right click -> modify)
browser.tabs.closeButtons [set to 3] this places the close button over on the right hand side
browser.tabs.tabMinWidth [set to 0] this makes the tabs small if you open loads

I use Firefox, although I've been playing around with Safari. Most people know how unbelievably crud IE has been in the past. I'm a web-developer personally and IE just really is dismal. Mainly IE6, but IE7 has improved, although not fully.

I have both on my comptuer and don't really see any advantage with Firefox. But, from what I hear, it's much better. I wish I could figure it out -- I feel like I'm missing something.

The ability to add 'extensions' is a great advantage.

I particularly like the things like duplicating tabs, using mouse clicking to awap between tabs, forward and backwards etc.

Addons such as Tab Mix Plus and mouse gestures are essential to get the most out of FF imho.

A simple one for me is printing - not sure about IE7 but in older versions is was so irritating that you couldn't just print a page with losing text on the right hand side. FireFox automatically scales the page down to fit A4.

It's so personal as to what advantages you would garner from it - but I would suggest keep playing with it.

    Thanks

    Well....

its OK. Thats about it. Currently, there don't seem to be ANY fully featured, stable, fast and easy to use browsers available for the PC.

IE7 is a bit slow to render, has a bit of a nasty interface (imo) and, while its MUCH better than IE6, its still got some nasty CSS bugs in it that cause some stupid errors on websites that don't code around it (and why should they have to code around it, just because Microsoft doesn't adhear to CSS2 standards).

Firefox used to be the best alternative out there, but since the advent of Firefox 2 its just got slower..no longer the speed demon it used to be.

Opera is nice and fast, and is one of the only fully CSS2/CSS-P compliant browsers out there, but it seems to have some stability issues still, although these are being worked out.

Safari 3 for PC is looking very promising - its the fastest 'mainstream' (if you can call it that yet) browser on the PC at the moment, and has a nice apple style interface with the very cool new version of spotlight search..BUT its still in beta, and still very buggy. Should be nice when its done though

Having said all that i'm sure many people will disagree, but as others have said theres no issue with installing them all and trying them out to see what works best for you I currently have all of the above installed, and use them all depending on what I am doing and which site I am visiting. There are also countless numbers of other less well known browsers out there, which a quick google search will easily show you

noscript is a useful add-on for firefox, user can allow only the websites which you want to view. therefore no more trojans from dodgy websites anymore

    hope you will like it
