Nvidia causing problems with UBUNTU and KUBUNTU!!

Apologies if i don't make sense as i'm a total newbie to LINUX.

    Okay here i go....

I'm trying to setup LINUXMCE on my pc. I've so far installed UBUNTU twice as I seem to be having problems with the nvidia driver. I even tried switching to the standard open source driver, but this too doesn't make a difference and UBUNTU ends up crashing just before the desktop appears.

I then read that i need to use KUBUNTU and LINUXMCE 1.1 as this has had some bugs fixed. Currently i've just installed KUBUNTU, but i'm still having serious problemS with the nvidia drivers. If I don't install them, the linuxmce won't run, but if i do install them, kubuntu crashes! I don't want to go back to windows vista, so what can i do???

    My system specs are:-

    INTEL E6300
    ASUS P5B MOBO
    POV NVIDIA 8800GTS (320mb)
    1GB RAM
    2 X 250GB HDD
    NEC OPTIARC DVD-RW

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I'M A TOTAL NOVICE TO LINUX, SO I WOULD BE MOST GRATEFUL IF YOU CAN GIVE ME HELP STEP-BY-STEP!!! - Thank You!

How have you tried to install the nVidia drivers?

Try looking on the Ubuntu wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia

the 8800's aren't support in the nvidia drivers in the ubuntu repo - the 8800's where released after them

Wait for the nvidia update in the repo's or use the ones from nvidia.com but be aware they may not be compatible with your current system.
    It is Inevitable.....

    • Uncle Psychosis's system
      • Motherboard:
      • Asus P5N-E SLI
      • CPU:
      • Intel Core2Duo E4300
      • Memory:
      • 2GB
      • Graphics card(s):
      • Nvidia 8600GT
      • Case:
      • Lian-LI PC7
Like ikonia says, that card is really new and probably isnt supported by the nvidia driver in the repository. I have an 8600GT and its supported under nvidia-driver version 100.14.03. You'll probably have to install it manually, but it really isnt very hard.

okay, nvidia isn't supported, but after reading a little, i found a program called ENVY which allows you to install the 8800gts drivers. Works a treat!

Oh, does envy support feisty now? Cool

I ended up doing the following to get ubuntu installed on my rig with 8800GTX cards:

Use live cd in safe mode
    install
boot to the installed version in safe mode (use the vesa drivers, crap res but at least you can get into your install)
    install rcconf
use rcconf to prevent gdm from loading (disable gdm, this is needed as you can't manually install the drivers inside gdm, you need a console, and the console via ALT-F2 didn't work for me with the vesa drivers and my card)
    download the nvidia linux driver
restart, log in to the terminal
install the driver (the commands to do this are on alberto milones how-to that details how to do the manual driver install)
    user rcconf to re-enable gdm
    reboot et voila!

Although as you say, if envy is available then use that, it's a lot easier

I believe you could just type /etc/init.d/gdm stop to disable gdm.

(By the way, isn't it Ctrl-Alt-num to go to a console, if that wasn't a typo?)

Yeah i tried that and it wasn't working with my beta live-cd install of feisty. Tried many ways of getting out of gnome to a terminal but none worked. It seems nvidia have fixed the vesa console problem in their latest drivers, just been looking at the notes on the web page.

The alt-f2 is a typo... although the correct key combination to use a different terminal definitely didn't work, just got a black screen with no prompt fingers crossed nvidia have fixed it now

    Can't remember if it's ctrl-alt-f2 or just ctrl-f2
