Can anyone recommend an effective program to completely erase several hard disk drives? I need to remove financial data from 4 drives before they are disposed of.

the HDD makers websites usually have a low level format utility, that wipes it clean.
How secure do you want?
active kill disk works fairly well.

four 4 hd's, i'd advise you to get wrecking bar, its a great package, would say its more of a hardware erase than a software one tho. Should be able to pick one up from your local B&Q

Unfortunately no angle grinder or my personal favourite of a sledge hammer. C'mon, if you're gonna beat the crap out of some hardware with a hammer make it a big'un.

I usually pull off the PCB and see if there's one of those 'do not remove' stickers. They often reveal a hole straight into the platters, after which they get a sharp implement hammered through them at random intervals.
Failing that the screws come off and take a chisel to the platters.
A zero-fill, as it's called.
even after you do wipe them with one of these programs i really would smash them up just to be sure.
Thanks for the suggestions every one. I'll try out the above programs, but once they're wiped I think I'll get out the hammer as well. Double assurance and it sounds fun![]()
