Question Linux Distro for mail server

Currently have a client who is looking to change mail server packages

Currently running vpop3 on 2003 server, but the performance isnt great and it hammers the server with antispam turned on

So we are looking for a lightweight linux distro to start with, for just email, AV and antispam / webmail

Whatever we decide in the end, it will need to initially support 100 users

Currently have the following pc to test with

    Duron 750mhz
    192mb
    20GB
    CDROM

Can anyone recommend a distro and the associated packages

Ideally with a gui as im a complete linux n00b

    Thanks

ClarckConnect used to do that and was GUI based etc.

pretty much any distro comes with a mail server of some kind as standard - exim4 on debian, postfix on ubuntu, and so on

a gui? that restricts you to "home server" distos like those Moby-Dick named

I've used Centos before, it was pretty easy to install

I'm not 100% sure you are actually fixing the problem though . Have you looked at external antispam solutions.

for instance our mail servers only actually handle 10% of the mail we get sent , the rest is spam delt with by a 3rd party. I can recommend a couple of places if needed

Mail is serious stuff, eg: getting black listed for being an open relay, losing peoples mail that sort of thing.

This is not a negative put down, but why would you put your mail system on an OS/Mail server system that you don't know how to run and configure the OS, let alone critical system like a mail system. A windows box should be able to support 100 users without issue, why not try resolving that issue before something as drastic as swapping to an alien OS, alien mail package, alien way of working.
    It is Inevitable.....

IIRC the mail software used isn't exactly the slickest in the book , but if the Antispam software is working too hard , then the one thing you can't control is the volume of the spam , especially if all 100 users are numpties when it comes to publishing their mail address

It can also depend on what else the server is doing - small companies tend to rely on that server to do absoutly everything from printing to file serving to hosting the accounts software etc.

its a nice idea to farm components out - and I can see where the motivation for costsaving is ( small companies are notoriously tight when it comes to IT purchasing. )

If mail volue is the cause of the problem then I'm sure theres more than one way to attack it.

grab me on MSN at some point and we'll go through a bit more

One of the things to ask is what do you want to do with it and how much will it make you?? ( as a company)

OK, Hardware is cheep; really it is, say you pick an IBM x 3650; 2 * Quad core CPU, 16 GB memory and 4 x 73 GB disks for £5,000. do you then want to go for SUSE + groupwise? this is will a very good solution and make you look great, but is it worth it ? if not then take gento, FC7 or OpenSUSE and work with that.

Work out your scope and what it is going to do for your company.

You'll need to perform a text based install. The GUI installer ideally requires 256 MB ram to run properly. Other than that, CentOS should suit your needs and is a great distro IMHO.
