Vista. Worht getting or not for a new build?

I'm doing a new rig next week and my old copy of winxp is shwoing it's age.
    The system i'm getting is:

    AMD AM2 Athlon 64 5000+ Windsor Core, Dual Core 2.6GHz, 2x 512KB Cache
    Abit KN9 Ultra, NF MCP55-Ultra, S AM2, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX
    2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP
620W Corsair HX V2 Series Modular SLi PSU, ATX, EPS 12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty
Already have sata hardrive, 8600gs card etc.

I'll be gaming more often than not, BF2142, CS:S, MOH:SH,
And then Crysis, MOH:Airborne when they come out.

So with the above system, should i possibly seriously think about investing in vista? I know i'll get the full benefits of DX10, but is even that worth it?

    Cheers in advance

PS: I have to admit that paying anything to "The Man" makes my skin crawl like it's covered in tax inspectors after every penny, so i'm loathe to even consider having it, but if needs must....

Well, as it's a new build and the 8600GS is DX10 enabled, I don't think it would hurt to go for Vista.
If it already had XP on it I'd have said stay with that until Vista SP1 comes out at least.
I think software developers are going to cater for DX9 for quite a while before dumping it. I know that Crysis is gonna come in 2 flavours DX9 & DX10, I don't know what the difference is gonna be like in the visuals, but if you've played the Matto4 mod on the original Far Cry with the 64bit patch, the eye candy in that combo is superb

Do you already have XP, or would you be paying for it? If so, I would definitely go for Vista now.

Otherwise, perhaps hold off until SP1 and/or Crysis to be released...

Not played any mods for Far Cry, just vanilla.
I own XP already hence asking if it was worth it going for vista or not.

Didn't realise Crysis was coming in two flavours might just stick with XP for now then as i'm not really liking what i've seen and heard about vista. Taken em this long to get a semi decent OS running with XP so gods know how long for vista!

    Thanking you fellas

Running vista 64 bit home ultimate, it costs £68 from scan and have had no problems with it, the only worry i had was the drivers for my printer and a few other bits, but they were all available for download at the manufacturers website.
Of all the people i know have vista none have had a prob more serious than norton internet security making the pc run slow, but that is easily fixed.

If you have a legit copy of XP then I would stick with that for the time being. Vista is pretty good, but I'd wait a few months and then they'll hopefullt have sorted out the "issues" so far :-)

or get two harddrives and run XP on one, and Vista on the other all the speed of XP when you want it, and the ability to run DX10 stuff on Vista, also means stuff is easy to fix if one of them goes wrong

It's legal to do that right? Considering owning both OS's each with a license your allowed right? as I heard some conflict about xp/vista dual booting before involving the hardware key or whatever? either that or keef should of just gone to bed with his gf and not messed around on hexus lol.

I would go for it. I'm running home premium x64 and XP. Vista's pretty solid, there's not much that plays up anymore. It's a good opportunity to get Vista via OEM too, which is far cheaper. Dont bother with ultimate it's not worth the extra money.

Though if you're on a budget stick with XP and spend the extra cash swapping the athlon for a Core 2 chip.

Noooooooooooooooooooo everyone's said ditch the amd. I refuse, intel are poo i tell you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate intel as much as i hate microsoft, despite knowing they're faster at the moment, but not as cheap.

So don't bother with ultimate then. I might as well stick with basic or premium as it's only a toss up between £53:71 or £65:65, and to be honest, the aero thingies don't bother me that much.
I only have the one hard drive so it'd be XP or Vista, and now i'm very tempted by vista just for updates and new gaming titles coming.

I'm amazed that they can charge so much for such little.

Saying that, i wonder what a like Intel system would cost.....

paulq you're short comments are disturbing. I was after a bit more info than "id wait its still in its infancy. theres not many drivers available and all sorts of hardware imcompatabilty at the mo" which is something i and everyone else who's replied here are well aware of such incompatibilities, but are very minor.

And thats coming from someone who believed all the hype about the downsides of vista!

Rest of you guys, i thank you

    Sam

Same old comment......same old excuse not to use Vista.

Ignore advice like this and go for it. Issues with Vista are now solved.

If in doubt then ask someone that uses it rather than someone that knows someone, that knows someone else thats used it. If there is a new OS that decent, stable and affordable, why take a 'step back' (which is exactly what it is) and use XP????? It makes no sense at all.

There are SOOOOO many threads like this now its getting daft.

Cheers Blitz. I've been chatting to a couple of people who use vista and heard no complaints, just the usual niggles and gripes that come with a new OS.

Minds made up, vista it is, but without the bells and whistles.

Once again, thanks guys, you've been a good help and i enjoy picking yer brains - thats why i'm here
[QUOTE]Clunk - If you hold a bright light up to the grills on the back, with the monitor off, they will fly out, unless they are dead, in which case, they wont.[QUOTE]
