Is there any way to tell what version of Windows XP you've got by looking at the product key alone? I have just a product key and no discs.

Press [windows key]+[pause/break] - that'll tell you.
Windows isn't installed, hard disk got trashed. I have discs for all versions of XP but no idea which of them this key is for.
AFAIK the codes are completely random, but on my activation sticker it does list the version. If you have the sticks with the codes on or the boxes they came with it will say somewhere.
volume licenced keys usually have vpk in the last set of 5 digits
ive had this problem too. One way (a very rough way)
if you have another machine there, which i presume you do... try using the jellybean keychanger to put the unknown key into ur (say, xphome) machine. If it works then it's that version. if it doesnt, its a different version.
not elegant, but helps narrow it down.
