    Tracert help! Virgin tinternet.

I'm trying to narrow down the cause of my tinternet being quite sluggish while browsing, so after a fresh install, I decided to do a trace route to www.hexus.net, and I was getting quite long times at point 11 (371ms) which is somewhere in london. The tracert quite often times out on point 11 as well.

    I'm guessing this isnt normal.

What are other people (on virgin tinternet) getting? I know it will vary, I just want to see if its just me with these 371ms times.

    Thanks

I've just done it a few times and point 11 has timed out on each.

    Code:
     10 107 ms 35 ms 47 ms ge0-1.linx.lon.rapidswitch.com [195.66.224.207]

     11 * * * Request timed out.
     12 98 ms 54 ms 47 ms 195.78.94.240

    Thanks for that

I suppose the question is, is it normal, or is it a fault?

Sometimes it's also worth tracing other related sites. Wireshark shows connections to the following ads servers, among others, that can sometimes cause delays:

    hexusads.fluent.ltd.uk
    hexus.uk.smarttargetting.com
    hexus.uk.intellitxt.com
    adserver.adtech.de
    x86adserv005.adtech.de

^^ adding these to your hosts file can speed up your browsing experience at HEXUS no end

this is going to depend on the routing path you use and the physical device on that route, not all devices will response, so although your seeing a response of 371ms - that could be held up because your waiting for the device to respond, not because the device isn't capable of routing the packet.
    It is Inevitable.....

We've got Manchester, Newmarket, Berkshire, Glasgow and South Wales all timing out on that same point, but only me with sluggish browsing.

Not entirely sure what to make of that

If I persist, and trace the route about 10 times, I did manage to capture one slightly slower hop, but it's far from consistent for me:

Many many routers are configured to respond to ICMP pings at a much lower priority, infact I've set a few myself this way via cisco IOS etc. Nothing to worry about at all.
