    Recommendations for ripping DVD collection

Whats the best program, file type and codec to use for this?

This needs to be done within Vista, so program compatibility might be an issue.

I was thinking .avi files with DivX or Xvid as the codec, not sure which is best though? I know the DivX standalone codec crashes vista media center, I have to use ffdshow to DivX in VMC.

TMPGEnc looks good to me...anyone used it?

Not in the UK, were an owner of a copyright protected product may create a copy for personal backup purposes, this is the British Isles, we have yet to blindly waver our rights like the Americans have.

Back to the OPs question, google for DVDShrink, it's a fairly simple program to use, DVD Decryptor was technically a better program, but the RIAA slapped the developer with the DMCA crap. And then there's AutoGK or GordianKnot for setting up the transcoding.

I use Gordian Knot in Vista x64 for converting my DVDs to Xvid and it works great.

I use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to disk then I use AutoGK to encode it into an AVI for me.

The main issue isn't backing DVD up as such, but breaking the protection on them to do so, which is most certainly illegal in the UK.

I did a little research a couple of years ago and apparently there was a precedent for doing copies for backup purposes. I did a bit of googling there and there's suppose to be some fuzziness about protected digital content that the government is going over. So technically it might still be illegal to copy CSS protected DVDs (which is like 99% of DVDs) but the entertainment industry never actually sues people for making personal copies in the UK. It usually takes a few years before defacto practices become fully legal, so it's up to the OP. But it's not like he's running a business out of copying DVDs, so he doesn't have to worry about being sued.

    It's a silly situation really.

Yeah my understanding was it is technically still illegal, but it's not actually enforced.

The euro-act is unfortunately not applied in cases already covered by our own copyright act, as mentioned in 6 of the page agent linked to.

    Or from the government:

So is making a bit by bit copy of the disk that would be for backup be OK, while ripping to a different standard - which entails decoding and recoding - may not be...?

If you do a bit for bit copy of a disc you're not by-passing the protection at all, you're ignoring it entirely, it would be like taking a book that's complete gibberish and photocopying it, the output is still the exact same gibberish, but that gibberish is still understandable by DVD players as CSS protected content (because no circumventions were used).

Which ultimately makes digital content protection laws anti-consumer, and even worse, anti-competitive. Real pirates don't use DeCSS/DVDShrink and a load of 4.5GB DVD+/-R's, they use 1:1 replication systems.

ughh, I totally misread what he said....my bad.

Interestingly, the 'doesnt need to be decrypted to be copied' argument was one that was used in the case against DeCSS in the US all those years back.
With no way to authenticate if the risk is 'real' or not, it'll still play.

AACS on the newer HD format disks seems to have addressed this in some ways. Time will tell how long that lasts though...
