    Unhappy word takin 100% cpu

I use word 97 ( I know - but it does all I need). It worked fine until i dowloaded ie7. Now as soon as I open it up it cyles every 8s ecs between % and 100% CPU utilization & my laptop sound like a jumbo taking off - any ideas?

I removed ie 7 - no change ( so put it back)
have reloaded WORD - no change.

There is also a related issue with OL express where it is now impossible to write an email if there is another email open or minimised. Every few secs the focus switches to the 1st email opened.

I'm at the "bin it" stage - so all help graetefully receive.

You could try using OpenOffice.org, it supports Office 97 files. And Thunderbird is independant of the IE rendering libs that are tied into Windows. While you're at it you might as well whack on Firefox and not open yourself to nasty web worms

jut too old and tired to fight the anti MS battles anymore ( though I agree) - just now I'd like to get what i've got working. But also interested to know what's screwed.

No way of knowing for sure, just could have been a windows update. Only way you're going to get it licked for sure is to reinstall Windows, if you really want to keep using broken software (and there's still the chance that it will barf up again).

it might be worth patching word 97 (assuming you havent already).

I know it's not specifically the issue you are having, but its worth a shot...

I had a similar issue with some variant of Wind for Wierdos but it was an actual word file that had some macro in it - causing 100% CPU utllisation. It seems strange that it occured after downloading IE7 (What on earth possessed you?) and having done so, it downloaded some dependency thatris not removed by the un-installation routine.

How to fix - without going through the pain of re-installing... try latest windows patches, try the latest office patches. Does it happen if IE is shutdown?

The Outlook express is certainly linked to the IE7 issue as the two are so closely linked -if you remove IE7 does OE operate normally?

Sorry I can't offer any hard advice - as aidanjt says, these things can be hard to pin down. One other thing to try is to open task manager and shutdown services (usually the last few (while running word) and see if any one is causing the problem. All I can say is that it sounds like some form of loop - but how to identify and fix it may not be easy.

yep - problem is there when ie7 is shut down and the OE problem was still there after i unloaded ie7

the only process in task manager currently using any significant cpu time is WORD.exe - no documents are open - and without doing anything the CPU useage changes from 0 - 97

    thanks for all the advice

Did you get this sorted in the end? Sounds like you've got a corrupt template (.dot) file loading up whenever Word is executed. This is commonly referred to as the normal.dot. Have a look through your machine for this file and try deleteing it. Word should generate a new copy of this file when it loads up for the first time.

Alternatively, there may be another .dot file being autoloaded by Word. I'm not sure what the default location is in Word 97, but have a look in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup and delete any .dot files in this location.

    still a problem

Thanks I'll try that - about the only thing I haven't tried.

I still think its something to do with OE - where if i have a minimised email - I cannot write or read another email; as the original one will "pop" up every 10 secs or so. The same time frame for the word CPU useage cycle.

Anyway normal.dot is now zapped -I'll play some more

    Thanks again
