media playback software that offers great jog/shuttle?

I'm after some (preferably free) media playback software that provides easy variable frame rate playback. It's to analyse footage, so the ability to playback at various speeds slower than realtime would be of great use.

I've tried a few I know of, but they only offer double speed, triple speed and not slower than realtime. Also, some easy key combination would be great to speed up / slow down playback speed - don't want to have to go to menus all the time to do it.

I could use some video editing software, but it just seems complicated and long-winded to produce something that I would think is available in simple media playback software.

Any suggestions?

You could give VLC Media Player a go. In the preferences there's a menu to bind keys to certain functions (slower, faster etc. is included).

Media Player Classic has "Decrease speed << | >> Increase speed" buttons on it. Another one to suck and see to see how robust they are.

The speed buttons on MPC are only for 0.5 and realtime, there's no finer adjustment.

However, having had a play with Vegas 7, that's the best. A bit cumbersome as it's a full blown editor, but does variable speed playback beautifully
