Network speed def. improved when using explorer..
Hasnt sorted any of the problems that I've been having.
Winmail and Ie7 are running as if they are on a 10 year old PC, appalling really. Tried disabling everything, the phishing, the security, the anti spam, tried disabling the antivirus etc, still horribly slow since one of the older windows updates.
The search still doesnt work properly, still hit and miss.
Clunk, give your PC some piriton. It sounds as if your PC is allergic to Vista!

That's odd clunk - IE7 runs fine on my PCs - def. something odd there! I don't use the search in anger (i use it to launch stuff off the start menu and for that it works fine) so i can't comment on you (previously stated) problems with it. Of course, us power users know where everything is already, right?
EDIT: did either of those updates actually try and fix those problems?
I agree 100% that there is something odd, but it isnt drivers.
I have a laptop with vista x86 on (inspiron 6400, 2Gib RAM core2duo etc) and that does it.
My main PC is the one in the "My Sytem" bit, and that is running Vista x64, and the only thing they share in common, software wise is firefox I think.
Both PCs exhibit the same behaviour, and that is...they are both fine (ish) right after the install, and then when all the updates are installed, I get the slow winmail of death (SWOD ). I open winmail, it goes white, as if it is going to hang, then after a few seconds (10 maybe), it opens, looks fine, until I try and click on the title of an email in the preview pane, and it hangs for abother few seconds (5 maybe), and then any navigation thereafter results in the same thing, a short delay/freeze while it does whatever it is doing (or not doing).
Explorer does a similar thing, in so much as it takes a while to load, then is really slow to respond, and the only thing I can liken it to, is when you go onto a really old PC after being on a fast one for a while, and you become impatient waiting for things to load, or like going back to dial up, when you have had broadband for a while...same kind of effect.
The search thing looks to be a definite bug, in so much as it sometimes works, and sometimes doesnt, regardless of the fact that the area it is searching in has already been indexed, and even forcibly re-indexed. It will find the file, and then later the same day, wont find it, and then it will find it.
If it was just one PC, then I would admit defeat and say its a driver problem, or software problem of some kind, but on two PCs, both completely different, with different software and hardware, it just seems too much of a coincidence to be anything but vista playing up.
Whaddaya reckon?
lol SWOD - i like it Yeah that's really strange as I can't say i've seen that on any of our systems (or mine at home) - have you tried disabling the auto-updates and progressively updating to find the one responsible? Just a thought. Else rollback the updates one-by-one etc..
EDIT: this any good to ya? http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/72...mail-slow.html
You could also try analysing the process to see what it's actually up to - process explorer is very good for this http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...sExplorer.mspx
I haven't tried Windows mail because i use office 2k7 or notes. I loaded it (unconfigured) and it appears reasonably quickly without the white-outs you mention.
I'm no fan of explorer - in fact, Vista's is probably clunkier (no offence) than XP's. I've been an Opus convert for a long time now as a result..
On drivers - you'd be surprised what it can affect. the 163.16's on Vista (nVidia) makes the shell very slow at thumbnails for example. Not that I wish to open another front on that particular battle lol!

Anyone seen any good performance improvements yet?

Aha! From that link you pointed me to, I did the reg file for restricted sites and that seems to have cured the winmail thing, but curiously, I didnt have spybot installed on the vista x64 partition, but I did have it installed on the XP partition, and there wasnt any blocked sites in the list. Weird!
Much appreciated mate cheers
Now to sort the search thing!
Yay! Dangel- piriton for computers.

Yeah, a little dickie bird told me about that fix.
That is lovely!

I have installed both without any problems. Seems a little more nippy now and files don't take as long to transfer.

I may have a performance increase to report, but it may be something else.
Previously when i ran kaspersky, it would become quite unuseable (maybe the disk performance bug thing?), well, it doesnt now, but I have also upgraded from version 6 to version 7, so maybe that has something to do with it?
