What is the advantage to installing a program Vs the standalone version?

I think what I means is what's the difference between getting a program with a self-installing executable over just downloading the binary by itself.

With programs that small it doesn't tend to matter, when you have larger, more complex programs using a self-installer makes sense, it performs all kinds of system tasks, file cleanups (for most of the part anyway), installs/removes services, and kernel modules.

Aha, thats along the lines of what i thought. I'm just picking an FTP program so i take it thats small enough
