    Which VMWARE

    Hello,

I wish to isntall vmware onto my pc at home so that i can practise/learn about different servers and also build a test lab, but im a little confused as to which versio/n/type of vmware i need to install.

I would like to run Win2k3server,XP Client,wind2kFileserver all virtual servers and thus be able to have a small domain running.

    Regards

VMware Server will do the job as well.. VMware Workstation is primarily aimed at software developers and system architects.

All depends what you really want to do. Workstation will allow you to build mult-tier environments with multiple O/S's. Server is a little simpler.

Workstation has a 30 day trial period, and costs $190 (or thereabouts), and Server is free. So you could download both and see which one is more suitable to what you want to do.

If you just want a microsoft environment then Microsoft Virtual Server is free you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/vir...s/default.mspx

You can also download pre-configured virtual machines for 2003 and Exchange from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/try/vhd/default.mspx

I would go with VMWare Workstation then. As you con put the machines into a team, where they have no access to the outside world. Also you can limit the teams network connectivity, such as only having a 10mb link between the machines and also say a 5% error rate in traffic. The other advantage with using a Team is that you can start them all up at the same time and suspend them at the same time.
