    how will vista run on...

    2.2ghz overclocked amd 2400xp-m with 1gb ram and a 9600xt 128mb card?
how will it compare to xp in games.will it really be thrashed and lag behind a xp sp2 machine majorly or is it a matter of fps.will disabling certain visual elements/add-ons that i won't need improve ram usage and overall preformance?

Good riddance. Wish I'd done it about a year ago.

Don't bother, that setup is about middle of the road maybe less for XP. It'd run pretty poor with Vista and you'd be gaining absolutely nothing for it.

The motherboard you are using will be a deciding factor if it will run Vista acceptably at all. Some of the chipset manufacturers decided that they wouldn't bother supporting "old" technology such as yours on Vista with new drivers.

For example nVidia only have an "Alpha" audio driver for nForce2 that was released back in '05 according to their website. They don't even list a proper nForce2 driver.

VIA on the other hand use the same drivers for XP & Vista and therefore continue to support old tech (back to KT400 chipset at least) on Vista - how it performs is another question altogether.

Bearing in mind you are using a mobile Athlon XP, I can only assume you're on an nForce2 board.

One other major factor to consider - Vista is a real memory hog and it is recommended to use 2Gb of system RAM for better performance.

Overall, I'd say Vista would be a waste of cash in your particular case.

I ran it on a socket A Sempron with 512mb of RAM when testing software compatibility, and once the indexing had done it's stuff, it was just as fast as XP was on a similar system.

It runs on fairly low end laptops, so it should be ok.

Thats more to do with the graphics card than the OS.
