I dont know if this breaks the EULA or not...

    I have a query regarding the Vista EULA;

There is the facility during the installation of Windows Vista to not enter your CD-Key straight away, instead you can enter it up to 30 days after you install the OS (or 120 if you insisit on using the 'crack' for that).

My question is, if I were to borrow my friends Vista DVD (Vista Home Premium, but it all comes from the same image IIRC) and install Vista Business, and then get a CD-Key from my Uni's MSDNAA programme when I go back, would I be breaking the EULA by using someone elses media to install it, or by not entering the CD-Key on install? (I dont expect the latter would be an issue, it's a feature built in to the installation)

    Cheers,
    David

    The media doesnt matter.

You can actually buy the media from microsoft. I bought the EDU upgrade which is 32bit, and then ordered a 64bit disc from microsoft for £2.50, and that contains all the x64 versions.

Not in your case perhaps, but it can matter. If you have a 32-bit OEM license you can't just choose to use the 64-bit media. Your license obviously doesn't specify, but in many cases (one of my own included) you can't request 64-bit media - it's just not recognised on the request form, and they'll only allow you to order replacement 32-bit media. Whether or not these would activate if you acquired the alternative media I don't know.

kidzer, I'm not sure to be honest. If it were a normal license it would be a no-no, but if you're covered by a MSDAA programme, I've no idea. I guess it's an on going system, so my guess would be yes. Even a most temperamental MS employee would be tight to pull you up for it though.

You can order the media online, direct from microsoft themselves, and the license works for either the 32bit or the 64 bit versions, and it works on the OEM versions because Ive just installed it on my laptop. The laptop previously had the 32bit oem home premium, and I used my 64bit disc to install and it worked without any problems.

I'm guessing that if it works for the oem version, it should work for the others?

Nope. I'll admit I haven't tested the OEM (I just assumed), but my own non-retail license doesn't offer me the 64-bit media when I try to order, only the 32-bit. I works for some, as you've clearly demonstrated, but not all.

I do have a retail license too, so I don't care, but some licenses are obviously more restrictive than others.

You're not breaking the EULA by not entering a serial on install. Just be sure to load the correct version from the DVD for your license. I dont see a reason why you cant do what you're suggesting i.e. install it and then enter your serial within 30days.

use this page to order a 64-bit anytime upgrade disc:
    https://emea.windowsanytimeupgradest.../Purchase.aspx

the x64 disc can also be used for clean installs

Re: I dont know if this breaks the EULA or not...

LOL, I know of the media page. What I'm saying is my license doesn't allow me to use 64-bit media. The page just won't show any, only the 32-bit. 64-bit is there for my retail license though.

//edit: that's not the media page anyway, that's the anytime upgrade page.

Your not breaking the EULA because the whole 30-day thing is for you to test the system etc.

Cool, I shall get Vista installed when I build tonight then

And hope I can get my MSDNAA copy before the 30 days runs out, or else I'll have to live with reduced functionality mode for a few days if I want to stay totally correct.

    Cheers chaps

I got mine from the anytime upgrade page, didnt have to enter my product key or anything, but they may have changed it now.

you can still order a 64-bit disc from that page. just because it says anytime upgrade, it will still do a clean install (i've tried)
there is no need to enter any keys, just choose the 64-bit media and purchase

[edit] seems they may have changed the pages slightly
if i follow the link i posted above, it takes me to a page asking me to buy ultimate...
but if i go to this page first:
    http://www.microsoft.com/ireland/win...e/default.mspx
scroll down and use the link "Don't have a disc? Order one now." and it takes me to the correct page where i can choose 32 or 64-bit.

Oooh, so you can. I was thinking of the other media order page, the one you use when you buy a retail license, but when they only include the 32-bit media.

Cheers! Useful to have a spare original for my wallet.
