    Vista Shortcut suffix

    Hey y'all

when you create a shortcut in Vista, it automatically appends a " - shortcut" to the end. This is a bit of a pain as use a lot of shortcuts to folders on another partition to restrict which folders Vista Media Centre uses. Does anyone know how to turn this feature off?

    Re: Vista Shortcut suffix

Not sure yet - I'll have to check it out when i get home. There HAS to be some reg fix for this. I have googled about and tried a few (all seem to be variations on making a link DWORD entry under windows explorer, but no dice. Mind you, it wouldnt be such a hassle if Vista Media Centre wasnt such an ass when it comes to file management.... but thats a WHOOLLLLEEE other story....

Anyway, thats for the tip 'hex - will check it out

    Re: Vista Shortcut suffix

Just looked on MS site, and there doesn't appear to be a version of TweakUI for vista yet, but I have found TweakVI http://www.totalidea.com/content/twe...kvi-index.html . there is a basic (as in free) download and this may be all you require.

Give it a go, if it doesn't work, bin it.

    Re: Vista Shortcut suffix

I just realised why there is a suffix - if you choose the 'create a shortcut' command, Vista has to put the suffix otherwise the name will be the same and error. I hadnt thought of this as I am choosing a bunch of folders and then using the 'paste shortcut' command in the destination folder....

I came across that too when googling - will have to check it out.

you'd think so - but windows shortcuts are files with the extension ".lnk" - there's no duplication unless you have multiple shortcuts

    Re: Vista Shortcut suffix

Yup I also have searched but could not find a solution that actually worked from reg pacthes to utilities. This is a bit of a pain but only a minor one at most.

    Re: Vista Shortcut suffix

Listening to a podcast at the gym this morning (how geeky is that?), and fxvisor (Shortcut Overlay Remover) was mentioned and it allows you to either remove or enable the explorer shortcut overlay arrow that is added to all shortcuts. (Better than my last suggestion anyway). Take a look at http://www.frameworkx.com/contentblo...blog=57&id=512

    Hope this helps.

Vinny, its not the arrow that bothers me, I can live with that, but the thing is that I am using shortcuts to all the folders that i have for music, videos etc, to place in user folders for VMC. That way I can control exactly what turns up in VMC. So I have to have a LOT of shortcuts... still, I'm sure that I can live with it...

I don't have a Vista PC to hand, but give this a whirl: http://www.tweakvista.eu/show_tweak.php?tweak=87
