    Flac 1.2.0 is out

Not sure why Josh Coalson has decided to call this 1.2.0 as opposed to 1.1.5, the change log is a lot shorter than the previous updates listed in the changlog.

    Changelog here: http://flac.sourceforge.net/changelog.html

Release page on Hydrogeaudio: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...howtopic=56386 (this might explain the numbering, i haven't read it yet)

    Downloads: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

    EDIT: Ah, this explains it

So a 1.1.x decoder might struggle with future versions beyond 1.2.0. I would expect the decoer to degrade gracefully, but who knows.

Have to look at that, although it is a shame that neither FLAC not Vogg-Orbis have really taken off like MP3.

    hrm @ breaking bitstream compatibility

this will be a bugger for the few devices that DO support the format

    Re: Flac 1.2.0 is out

Apparently Josh has been in contact with the manufacturers of those devices and has been working with them since January. He also said in that tread that he won't be releasing any updates that break compatability with 1.1.x until he is confident 1.2.x is wide spread enough. This could take some time

FLAC is really widely used when it comes to lossless compression, it just isn't a practical alternatice to MP3 when you take size into account.

Yep, MP3 really is cack. Read this article. Says it all. Trouble is cos iz is got a ipod iz is cool innit. Most people simply look at what the device playing the track is rather than the quality of the audio and the playback quality of the device. One reason I don't own an idiotpod.
