Any Free Picture\Paint Packages?

Ok so there is lots of shareware programs out there, just wondering if there is a free paint or art package, the reason I ask is I want to use this at my school I work for, and not fork out £100’s for licences when a simple program could do until April (when we get some more cash)!!

Any ideas or links would be great chaps

GIMP is the best i've seen, better than paint shop pro i reckon..
