Cannot use Word as email editor in Outlook

I have a laptop running Outlook 2002 (XP) with Office 2000 on Windows XP. I cannot use Word as the default email editor in Outlook and have to resort to rich text or HTML. I want to use Word so that I can take advantage of the spell check, etc, etc.

I'm guessing that the problem is due to having Word 2000 and Outlook 2002 but I can't find anything helpful on the internet. Any ideas?

When you say you can't use word, do you mean you are getting an error?, or it just won't give you the option. You service packed the word 2000 ?, as some of the service patches for office 2000 sorted interoperability with other office varients from memory.

Re: Cannot use Word as email editor in Outlook

You are correct that the problem is different versions of Outlook and Word. Outlook will only use an concurrent version of Word as an editor, definitely not an earlier version, however I am unsure about a later version of Word as I've never had an opportunity to test.

This is to encourage you to upgrade i'm afraid! And if you now can't live without the new features in Outlook but don't want to upgrade fully, you're stuck!

Re: Cannot use Word as email editor in Outlook

Yeah, I've been searching the net for answers and it seems to be different versions are the reason for the problem. I don't get an error but in Outlook -> Options -> Mail Format the "Use Word as Email Editor" is greyed out.

    Some solutions I found included:

Remove Norton Software (something I'd recommend regardless)
Possible corrupt normal.dot template - remove or rename.

Of course none of these worked and it appear that it just won't work with Word 2000 and Outlook XP.

    Good ol' *** !
