Remote Desktop software - hmm, which one?

OK, so rather than have to swtich my HDTV on any time I want to use my HTPC for boring tasks (like using the card reading to transfer mp3s to my phone) I'd like to use a remote desktop connection.

I tried the in built MS one which is fine, apart from the fact I can't shut down the PC with it.

Do any RD tools give you full control of the slave machine so you can shut down?

http://www.realvnc.com/ <-- can do that, you can do everything you'd normally be able to do on the machine, including shut it down

Why can't you shut down the machine through Start Menu or CTRL + ALT + END ??

definitely, though post-sp2 (it's years since i properly mucked with windows) it might require some security policy tinkering

Re: Remote Desktop software - hmm, which one?

You can shutdown and restart from an RDP session by using the shutdown command from the cmd prompt - easist way is to create batch files (use notepad and save as "all files" type with .bat extension) for future use:

    Shutdown:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe /s /c "scheduled shutdown" /f /d p:4:1

    Restart:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe /r /c "scheduled reboot" /f /d p:4:1

You can even shutdown or reboot from a remote pc by using:

    /m \\ComputerName

For full list of what you can do:
    shutdown /?

You can then also use these batch files with the task schedular - useful if you're recording tv overnight and want to shutdown when it's finished.

Real VNC is great, use that :]

We use it at work and I use it at home to control servers etc, good piece of software

Another vote for the "You can shut down a PC using RDP" brigade. I just did it to test it.

    Start>Settings>Windows Security
    click Shut Down

Bob's your uncle. No really, he is.

Re: Remote Desktop software - hmm, which one?

You can also do it via task manager on RD.
Not sure why they removed it from the start menu; probably to stop it being hit on accident though.

Is there a difference between Real VNC and Win VNC (something I tried a couple of years ago) ?

nothing enormous. VNC is an open protocol, there are many implementations that focus on different things

Ultra VNC - it's open source, and supports encryption. Much better than the cut down Real VNC in my opinion.
