    Re: what os

This question is covered in great detail if you do a search of the forum for the last month.

The bottom line Vista has some problems which if you're prepared to work out and hang on to resolve invest only once, if you invest in XP you'll have re-invest the same money again later to up date to vista.

XP64 is a dead OS now, despite the fact that its actually good.

64 bit technology's main drive is pretty much memory useage above the 4GB limit, so if you've not got 4GB of ram, you may not see any benifit for moving to a 64bit OS.

    Re: what os

If you have no old hardware(doesn't seem you are)/software then I would vote Vista, because it is 'the future' of the Windows OS.

However, if you have some old/obscure software, it my have issues with running on Vista because of the tighter access controls in the OS, in which case XP is a safe bet.

But I'd always go Vista with a new machine now.

    Re: what os

i would reccomend Vista 9/10 times too, i would only say XP for someone whos PC isnt capable of running it..

I would also go for 64-bit as you may be getting 4GB soon too

    Re: what os

Research, research, research and err do some more research. It is always the piddling little things like that webcam you got from granny at christmas that will give you driver issues. Or that specialist bit of software that you use once in a blue moon. Thoroughly research the kit and software you use and whether it's stable/supported under vista. If it is then go for it.

Vista 64 works fine for me for gaming with a similar setup to yours.

    Re: what os

You don't really say much about what you are going to be using the system for. Either XP or Vista will work with that hardware. I haven't really had many problems with Vista but I'm not recommending it until SP1 comes out (some time next year?).

Personally, I would be inclined to go for XP Home, it is pretty rock solid by now but it will not make much difference so get whichever is cheaper.

Incidentally, I would also suggest you save about 20Gb on your Hard Disk Drive and install RedHat Fedora Linux 7.

    Re: what os

why should he save 20gb of his disk to install fedora ?? if he's got no interest in linux.

Also redhat is not fedora, I'm not nitpicking but Redhat 7 is a different product than Fedora 7.

XP Home is a half operating system with no real security builtin (I'm not talking about security patches here, but the inability to modify the local admin account etc.). XP Professional has twice the functionality of Home and is easier to secure.

    Re: what os

I think Ikonia has hit the nail on the head here. Either buy Vista now, or buy XP now and probably upgrade to Vista when the killer apps come out. Redhat really isn't a gaming OS...

As for XP home being a half OS... I think it's a perfectly fine OS for what the OP wants. He doesn't sound like he wants to add it to a domain or be using RDP to control it (and yes, I know there are other differences, but I feel that telling him to buy Pro is basically telling him to waste his money)

barely anyone uses the extra features of Pro, certainly not enough to warrant doubling the price. check the list on http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...p_home_pro.asp - how many gamers really need dynamic disk support & roaming profiles?

i use 32-bit home on my gaming partition, despite a valid 64-bit pro license.

Not many, but I'd say that more people would want Guest switched off and other enhancements. Basically, if you have a couple of networked PCs and have ever tried to share information between them, Home just doesn't cut it. For a single install then I guess it's OK, I've just been frustrated so many times by lack of functionality in Home and with the OEM Pro edition available for £80 now I'd don't see it as being too much.
