Hello guys,

Sounds good. Are you Planning to run a PXE boot service?
windows server has windows deployment services built in. that has pxe boot built in but can be a pain to setup.
Ive used Acronis True Image Server for some testing purposes.
Far easier than Ghost IMHO - didnt used the Secure Zone stuff tho.
Just imaged to other available storage on the network and restored from there too.
We use Alteris.. (I prefer Ghost .. It's ok.. It has just been bought by Symantec tho, so I imagine the technologies will be assimilated .......
Yeah, apparently the next major version of Altiris will use Ghost.
It's always a shame when Symantec buys a good company. In my experience I've seen prices shoot up and support become next to useless. I hear that Altiris is going to remain largely seperate from Symantec in terms of Operations so perhaps things won't be too bad.
ive used altris before in a different job, and we didnt like it.
As far as i can tell True image server is for backing up servers and True Image workstation is for your general imaging of desktops/laptops. I like it so far. I like the feature being able to remotley push the agent onto a desktop/laptop that you have just built and then making an image of it remotley. Also supports barts pe which may be handy.
Has anyone else had a good look at the new Ghost Suite ? It's a different beast alltogether. Not just images anymore .. .
Depending on your use / infrastructure that'll be fine. A couple of other alternatives spring to mind though:
- using Acronis instead of Ghost (already mentioned)
- an MS Remote Installation Service server (RIS)
- Business Desktop Deployment through MS Systems Management Server (SMS)
If you are just wanting to image new machines with a base image, or to return existing machines to that state... no (automated) user specific application installs etc, then Ghost or Acronis will be fine.
BDD is really for enterprise scale problems, but if you're looking to not only install base images, but to also upgrade existing computers whilst saving user data / installing user specific apps automatically then BDD is your friend!
PXE just means that you can network boot the machines into whatever imaging software you choose, rather than having to make / tailor boot floppies or cds for each type of machine you deal with. (If they support it obviously!)
P.S. I'll try to post some links when i've got some time later, and the post count to do it too
We tend to use ghost to make an image of the desktop initial build and then fire that across to whoever builds the machines, dell currently.
They then just stick this on as default, as someone previously mentioned, if you are just looking to use a default image for new pcs - many manufacturers/suppliers will do this for you.
Windows 2008 using the free built in Windows Deployment Service I was able to reimage x40 Windows 7 clients in 1 hour. Thou takes to get the right Clean image built
Quick note here dude - in 2007 when this was posted Windows Server 2008 didn't exist - lol!
