    Windows Vista Internet SO slow!!

I've got Windows Vista Home Basic - I've read that it's limited to 5 concurrent connections at a time... and I've noticed it seriously slowing down my web browsing at times...

If I have 3 tabs open, mp3s from another PC, and then try open another window / tab in a browser it takes ages before it loads the page (it seems to wait for the other pages to finish loading before it'll load - it seems to freeze). It's the same with downloads, I seem to be limited to a maximum of 3 downloads at a time...

Anyone know the fix for this. It's going to do my head in if it's like this for the rest of it's life.

I've read it's a Vista home basic problem (limited to 5 connections), but I've also read it might be something to do with SPI ? and Linksys routers (source: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?...pic=89394&st=0 ) and I have a linksys router.

None of my other PCs have this problem (XP home, XP pro, etc) going through the same router.

    Please help!

    Josh

I was having a nightmareish time with Kaspersky... switched back to NOD32 and it's all golden... same problem with multiple connections causing mega slow-downs, and I'm using Ultimate!

I'm using Avast at the moment. I was using Mcafee security centre - that was worse - using 50% CPU time all the time!

Sounds like that it wasn't configured correctly........had NOD here for ages - on XP Home, Pro and Vista Ultimate and Home Premium - no probs.

Re: Windows Vista Internet SO slow!!

Getting closer with this kaspersky, I have changed a few settings and managed to get the RAM usage down to 50-70% whilst scanning, which isnt great, but is much better than 96% and things arent completely saturated now.

I'll report back if it gets any better, if anyone is arsed

Don't get me wrong, it's been my AV of choice for ages, but it just caused me grief.

Re: Windows Vista Internet SO slow!!

just to be clear, the network connections limit is NOT on TCP/IP sockets, but on network and file sharing limits.

This has no impact on TCP/IP at all.

What is worth noting is vista has a competely new TCP/IP stack, which if you use gigabit for your home media forfillment (like me) you find less CPU time taken... I didn't really test it for latency on net surfing. But suffice is to say, its not that.

I would look as others have said at your virus scanner.

Re: Windows Vista Internet SO slow!!

It seems like I'm getting fairly regular drops in the internet connection - for example I'm download three game demos, some of them have kept regularly failing, plus I've just had 2 opera windows fail to load (yahoo and hexus). I'm wondering whether Vista doesn't like my router. I will try temporarily disabling avast and see what happens...

Seems like disabling Avast temporarily fixed it - what AV software would you recommend?

Re: Windows Vista Internet SO slow!!

Have a try of the Kaspersky 6 month trial, and do the fix that I posted.

Theres also AVGfree, which worked fine for me on 32bit.
