apparently there is a new ATI Linux driver on the way that promises better performance than previous drivers. you should be able to download it shortly.

yawn
It is Inevitable.....
early benchmarks by phoronix show a 50%-900% speed increase, depending on hardware, as well as support for radeon hd 2xxx cards. still no aiglx though
and amd have accounced they're gonna release full specs for r500 and below, including an open source reference 2d driver
still a scratch on that record.

i wouldn't say they were *unstable* so much as a royal pain the the arse. as you suggest, they cack themselves at any given opportunity, and they're simply harder to get working than nvidia drivers
but cooperation with assorted distro maintainers ought to be helping on that front (i haven't used an ati card in an age, i'm guessing a bit)
No, they really were disgustingly, horrible, disfunctional, buggy drivers. I couldn't even get an x1950pro card working (at all) 4 months ago, and before that I had an x800 that would periodically crap itself, with no log entries to explain what happened, and less we not forget the X->tty->X->tty (hang) bug. It'll be a long time before I put any money towards an ATi card again, and it'll need to be me not hearing ATi related problems for a long time.
im optimistic, altho I have no XP with Linux + ATI together
I've learned from bitter experience that anything ATi + Linux + Optimistic = big disapointments. Expect the worst, that way you'll only have something to be pleased with when good things come, and no disappointments when something doesn't meet your expectations.
apparently amd are opening up the spec to the cards. allowing fully open source drivers to be available .
