Blogging - best blog tool for a corporate blog

Just started my new job as 'web community champion' with a software company in Scotland. My role will be to set up and manage a corporate blog, forum, and contribute to web content as well as other activities.

Anyway, I'd like to have the blog, forum and some training as part of a 'community' sub-folder on the company's website. So far, Wordpress seems to be the most impressive blog application... there seems to be a decent community behind Wordpress with skins and widgets, etc.

Does anyone have any different opinions, or experience of others?

What is your budget? Sounds like Microsoft Sharepoint might be the perfect solution if your company can afford it.

Not sure on budget. Sharepoint for blogging... I was actually thinking of just installing WordPress on the web server and creating a community portal to invclude it, a forum (probably vBulletin) and other things.

    I'll look into Sharepoint though.

Wordpress is very good. However you will need a database with PHP support (and of course a webserver. You didn't say whether you would be using a dedicated server for the blog, or what OS you would be using.

Apache, Mysql and PHP will all run on a windows box (quite a basic one - no need for server 2003 or that malarky) or if you want to do it really cheaply, run it under Linux. Fedora Core 6 (and I guess 7) have Apache and Mysql available as RPMs so installation is a doddle, but you will need to do the configuration yourself (as is the case on a windows box.)

I run 5 blogs using Wordpress, MySql and Apache, all under FC6 on a low end four year old Socket A machine. (I did try running it on a hacked netgear NSLU2 NAS box. It worked, but very slow response - the processor wasn't really up to running MySQL!)

Wordpress is as good as any for a blog. phpBB is also very good forum software, last time I looked it had less AJAX magic as vBul. but they both do the same job. Or you can use a swiss-army knife style CMS like drupal or some such to provide blogging and other community-like stuff.

Thanks for the tips. It'll be on a dedicated web server (which we'll be renting). I am swaying towards using wordpress and vBulletin for the forum.

Have a serious look at Joomla as a CMS system, it can handle blogs and forums really well.

There are also some amazing templates available - http://demo.rockettheme.com/

I've had loads of experience with this so give me a shout if you have any questions.

Re: Blogging - best blog tool for a corporate blog

Thanks for the advice Nick. I'll do some homework on Joomla. It might be the perfect way to have a blog, forum and other parts 'combined' into one standard interface. What is Hexus using? I see the forum is vBulletin, and the blogs are a feature of the latest vBulletin release if I'm not mistaken. Is it wrapped in some sort of CMS?

What would be REALLY nice is to have a full integration of Joomla, vBulletin and WordPress with a single log in... anyone know if it's possible?

Depending on the format you could look at database table triggers on two of the three products, I've done this with other applications that you've mentioned but not with the exact combination you've set where you set a database trigger on the other two applications so that when a user account is created in database 1, fields 1 and 2, database 2 gets fields 1,2,6,8 populated and database 3 gets fields 1,2,4,6,7,8,9 populated with appropriate data.

It gets more complicated when you consider application groups, but with a bit of effort on the user auth tables, database triggers and an understand of the group system its do-able
    It is Inevitable.....

Who did the Hexus CMS? Anyone know... out of curiosity.

Maybe using WordPress with vBulletin integrated would work for me...

I've used joomla before and liked it.

Re: Blogging - best blog tool for a corporate blog

does it matter who did the hexus one ?

The bottom line is you've got to chose your own product as this one is custom to hexus.

Either pick an off the shelf products or start getting quotes from web designers. I know of one web design group that has their own cms product and tweak it to meet your needs, and another web development company that will knock you one up from scratch to meet your needs at a very good price.

Forget what hexus does/did - its what you want and need and your time and budget.

HEXUS is a ground up custom CMS system.

If you want a good CMS with the biggest range of open source extensions and people working on it then Joomla is your only option. Just take a look at the available things you can integrate - http://extensions.joomla.org/
