Unhappy XP Home SP2 - Can't change read-only flag on files

    Hi guys

I'm using XP Home SP2 and am unable to change the read-only flags on certain files. I noticed this when trying to create a BartPE/DriveImage XML disc - the files I'd pulled from my XP install CD were read-only (once copied to a folder on my C: drive) and couldn't be changed. I've noticed similar behaviour when copying FLAC files from a Samba share on my Linux server to the XP box... all read-only.

I've Googled, read several Microsoft KB articles and tried attrib -r and the other MS suggestions but got nowhere! It seems a common problem but I don't seem to be able to find a solution.

    Any ideas please?

    Thanks for reading

    Oaf

...over 50 views and no suggestions: should I just try to reinstall XP and hope that the system behaves itself with a fresh OS?

Or is it worth moving my question to the HELP forum?

    Thanks for looking anyway

Its possible for some reason the read only flag is inheritted down - you could try setting readonly off at the top of the folder structure and then do it.

Also, do you have full ntfs / file permissions?

    Hi EvilMunky

Thanks for your suggestions, will try them this evening. I am using an admin account (so I assume that means I have full privileges for NTFS?) or should I be going into safe mode (I seem to remember there are more security options available in XP Home there?) The folders in question are on the root of the C: and D: drives so I guess I'm as high up the directory structure as I can be.

Thanks for posting I'll see how I get on tonight.

    Cheers

    Oaf

Reboot in safe mode and then follow the instructions here to make sure that your admin account has ownership of the files.

Thumbs down Re: XP Home SP2 - Can't change read-only flag on files

    Hi

Thanks for the link. I followed the instructions and still can't change the read-only attribute, despite ensuring ownership by the admin account. I hit apply/OK and the dialog box pops up as if it is changing permissions and then I find that it hasn't changed anything.

I've also tried reinstalling XP from my slipstreamed disc and (before I do anything else at all - no change to prefs, updates, anything) when I create a directory in the root RAID0 C: drive I *still* find that it defaults to read-only... which then can't be changed. (Same on my RAID1 D: drive.)

Have I done something really strange to my slipstreamed install disc (can't imagine what and it's not the first time I've done a slipstream either)?

I have a backup of a non-RAID install which I guess I'm going to have to revert to if I can't get this RAID install of XP working (not that I think that being RAIDed can have anything to do with my read-only problem... can it?!)

Does anyone have any more ideas please?

    Thanks again

    Oaf
