any freeware for converting .avi files to a format I can burn and play on DVD?

try www.afterdawn.com. loads of guides for copying and converting near enough anything.

When I asked about DVD formats (above) I went in thinking I was going to use http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/ but was advised to try WinAVI.

Once again Hexus was right.
