    Share & Folder Permissions

I have a folder D:\Share - I wish to stop people from being able to save data in this folder (unless they are part of certain groups.

I wish people to be able to save data in D:\Share\Folders - But I dont actually wish \folders to be a share.

I am confused with how to do this. I set for "everyone" gorup able to read D:\Share\ and under the security tab for each of the "folders" in D:\Share I set for the groups \users I want with more permissions to be able to write to the folders but it says access denied.

    Help!

    Re: Share & Folder Permissions

the share permissions control connectivity only not file system permissions

So if you set the share to "everyone" then that means everyone can connect to it - not do things with it.

You then need to set folder permissions - so eg:

you can set "everyone read" on the folder d:\share and allow that to filter down recursivly, you can then set write access to a specific group on d:\share\folder and not set it recursivly, that way everyone can read d:\share\folder, but only members of your selected group can write to d:\share\folders
    It is Inevitable.....

    Re: Share & Folder Permissions

You need to set the Share permission for Everyone WRITE, then the NTFS (Security) permissions to control the specific users/groups on D:\Share.

    i.e.
D:\Share itself needs Everyone READ access with "inherit permissions" disabled
    - this will allow users to browse through the Server service to see the share and view the contents

    D:\Share\Folders needs Everyone WRITE access
    - this will allow users to create/edit/delete files and folders under this sub-folder
