Is there an app that "locks" the views you choose?
I dont understand why windows is so bad at it, doesnt even make an effort, i choose list view, go up a folder, go back into the folder and its back to icons...![]()

Yeah, it really annoys me. I was hoping that Vista would sort the problem, but I guess not. I don't mind the default layouts, but I do mind have music tags for my documents folders, or large icons...
I have to delete some registry keys to revert them back to normal until the next time it happens.
Presuming you have win xp. Open a folder > Tools > Folder options > View (tab) > make sure the box for "remember each folders view setting" is checked. Also you can apply your preferred setting to all folders.

It does it in vista as well, only in vista, it seems to choose a random sized set of icons just to confuse things further.
I have the stuff on my :L drive with the view set to "list", and I have the "computer" view set to medium icons, but when I open the "computer" view, the icons are all huge.
Just a further annoyance.
Vista changes it view depending on how many items are in the folder and the sie of the Explorer window it seems. Most annoying.
Hold shift or control (don't remember which) and click on the red cross. Don't ask.
I was once fond of using third party explorer type software but not anymore. I think it's called UltraExplorer or something like that.
Well Im glad Im not the only person to get this 'feature'. It's not happened recently but for ages my 'restore' window size would be a couple of pixels smaller than if it was maximized and no matter what I did, it'd always stay like that.
so that saved the window size?Hold shift or control (don't remember which) and click on the red cross. Don't ask.
It forces the view to be saved too, or at least it does most of the time. I use it when the dialog boxes don't reset themselves back after they've had a habit of sorting everything into descending order - you do it through the explorer view rather than on the box itself though.
Go to a folder set your settings as you want them to be, then go to
Tools > Folder Options > Select the TAB View and then hit Apply to all folders
Make your changes again the same way, then right click somewhere empty, and select customize this folder. Then go to the tab customize. I hope this helps somewhat
If you must use WE(!), try as above, then to start somewhere sensible mod. the shortcut on the desktop to have:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, c:\documents and settings
in Target; %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% in 'Start in'.
I also select 'Maximized' and use Ctrl+Shift+E to start it.
However, PowerDesk Pro is much better, with ExplorerXP for some things.

seems to work fine for me. 32px auto arrange aligned to grid sorted by type. every folder all the same. vista had a minor bug of this at the start. if you customized this after a while it'd not let you select more than 1 file at a time. in all folders.
