    Help reinstalling XP

I just formatted the hard drive of my old XP machine for the first time since I got it about 5 years ago. However, while Im reinstalling Windows I get an error message saying:

    'Fatal Error
An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.

One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

    Incorrect function.

Press OK to view the setup log file.'

    The setup log file says:

    'Error:
SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\1386\asms\6000\MSFT\VCRTL\VCRTL.MAN" on line 11.

    ***

    Error:
Installation failed: D:\1386\asms. Error Message: Incorrect function.

    ***

    Fatal Error:
One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.'

Pressing OK (only option) then restarts PC. Ive tried formatting again and starting over but I get exactly the same message. Anyone know whats wrong?

Tried with a different XP disc?

Assuming it's not failing because of hardware error my first port of call would be trying different media to install from.

    Re: Help reinstalling XP

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I dont have another XP disk. I tried cleaning it but same message. It looks 5 years old but not too bad - Ive certainly got games that look more scratched and work. Is there a good way that I can clean the disk and try to get it working?

Metal polish or plastic polish may help - but at your own risk! Make sure the printed side isn't damaged as that is the side that is least protected. If it is, then the disk is irreparable.

    Re: Help reinstalling XP

Is the disk almost certainly what it is then?

Ill have a go at the disk, but if I dont get it working where could I get a new one, how much, and presumably I can still use the same CD key?

    Re: Help reinstalling XP

Might it help if I put a newer disk drive in from my other PC - might it be better at reading scratched disks?
