Broadband has slowed my PC bootup time?

    Hi all

I'm a bit baffled by this - since getting Be Value Broadband (8Mb uncapped unthrottled etc.) connected, and attaching my XP MCE PC to the Be Box router via Ethernet, my bootup time into Windows has got about 4x longer. Most of this time is spent on the "Windows XP" splash screen with the little blue bar scrolling by.

I'm guessing it's to do with the network rather than something over broadband? The Be Box is set to DHCP and my PC to obtain an IP address automatically. Is it anything to do with this? I'm just guessing, frankly...

I've got Bootvis but I don't really know what to do with it either...

What's going on? Can someone please help with suggestions of what the delay is, or info on how I can try to find out and fix it?

Hope you can help, cheers all

    DM

I'd imagine that would be part of the issue, yes - taking time to wait for an DHCP lease to be offered and accepted could slow the process down - but ~4x slower seems a bit extreme.

Easy way to test, try setting a manually assigned IP Address and see how it goes - if you need help with how to, let me know

weird, I've not noticed this and I'm on Be using the speedtouch router and MCE2005 as well.

saying that I do have the router set so I get assigned the same IP address all the time (192.168.1.69 - yes go on laugh you childish people) and I hardly reboot or shut my PC as I have the A8N-SLI cold boot issues happening all the time.

Re: Broadband has slowed my PC bootup time?

When I did specify an IP address in Windows, rather than to obtain one automatically, I couldn't get online. Should I set the router to always assign me the same IP address, and then set my PC to that? I think I've already tried it but I've had a fair few problems getting all the PCs online so maybe I should try that again.

How do you specify what address you want on the router (not that I particularly care what it is)? And what happens then when I turn my PC off - does that mess anything up?

Might it be to do with the fact that I also have another PC connected via the USB, and a Wireless USB adaptor configured? Although both of these are off and I'm not file sharing (yet, that's to come in another thread...)

Re: Broadband has slowed my PC bootup time?

I have done what I have done as my PC is essentially a downloader and media server so having the same IP makes it simple to stream and setup the squeezebox and slimserver as well as streaming to the xbox 360.

if you want to set yours using the router, go into the admin page found at http://192.168.1.254 and when this has loaded you should see a list of devices in the "network" section.

Find out which one is your PC - click the name or MAC address as it sometimes shows and ih there you can set the DCHP to reserve it for your PC.

Re: Broadband has slowed my PC bootup time?

did you try unplugging your router/modem to confirm it really is that device causing the longer boot up time?

Very unlikely (IMHO) to be broadband related. Check the event viewer and see if you've got any problems with the loading of any windows components/services (it gives timestamps too, so you can see how long each stage takes).
