    Re: comparing linux to windows

    Google will provide plenty of answers. Off the top of my head:

    For GNU/Linux:
    * Superior package management
    * Free, both in price and as in free speech
    * Arguably more stable and with lower requirements
    * No need to install many drivers (most included in the kernel)
    * Can run off a CD
    * Settings easily changeable in text files
    * Choice, in distribution, desktop environment, etc., and not being tied so much to one particular company.
    * Arguably easier reinstallation, thanks to the package management, and having all user settings in /home/user (this is supposed to happen in Windows, but doesn't necessarily happen in practice).
    * Arguably more secure
    * Better interaction with developers

    For Windows:
    * More games
    * No hardware compatibility problems
    * Most software arguably designed for Windows
    * People usually have experience with Windows
    * It comes preinstalled from Dell et al.
    * You can use GUIs to change most settings, rather than having to understand text files

    You can try it out easily yourself using a LiveCD - there are plenty around, from Ubuntu to good ol' Knoppix.

    Remember Dell is shipping with Ubuntu as an option now-a-days. And I believe Lenavo is shipping with Novell SuSE. Even the pre-installed arg is a thing of the past now. And I wouldn't necessarily say 'no' hardware compatibility problems with windows, just better supported upstream

    Fair points! Have Dell started to expand their Linux line beyond the US yet?

    So, what person less lazy than me wants to compare Windows and Ubuntu prices?

    linux is a kernel, like ntoskrnl.

    if you want to make comparisons of operating systems, you need to compare operating systems (e.g. ubuntu to vista)

    Sounds like your "teacher" wants to waste your time and his/hers. I'd return a paper that had the words "which distribution would you like me to compare to what version of windows?" along with a classic hairy c**k on the paper. Without a good knowledge and experience of both systems over a wide range of applications the question is meaningless.

    I'd love to meet your teacher for a drink, whereupon I'd ask him/her what they want to drink, order it, kick their ass, drink their drink and mine, leaving them to think why they are such a a crap teacher and failing their students.

    They have given you an exercise in finding information from whatever source. "I dunno, I haven't got a PC running Linux", would get 99%. -1% for the dunno and not "don't know", imho.

    Or simply the following; "these words were written on a Mac", would get you an A and you wouldn't have to waste time in my bullsh*t class for the rest of the year.

    Unfortunately, trotting out anything that you get from Google will get you the marks. How could it do otherwise? If your teacher has knowledge of the difference then they should be imparting that knowledge to you, unless of course you missed the class and can't use Google .

    Re: comparing linux to windows

    When did college/university tutors ever ask specific questions?.. By Linux, I'm sure he means GNU/Linux which is generic enough to make sense, they all use the same kernel and userland utilities.. There's little difference worth speaking of between specific binary distros.

    Re: comparing linux to windows

    ubuntu is faster, better, cheaper, easier and is more aesthetically pleasing than vista with gui plugins. it also gives you the option from atleast half a dozen very stable GUIs that dont use stupid masking systems.

    just about the only problems with linux is that some hardware manufacturers dont make drivers or release specs for other to make drivers, but i have found hardware that has the opposite problems (ie, no windows drivers). and games, which is basically because games development is entirely ruled by companies throwing out loads of crudding yet another RTS/FPS/RPG etc that dont want to take any risks supporting a platform that isnt very popular, and programmers using crud libraries that are not portable

    Personally I'd recommend PC-BSD over ubuntu/kubuntu. I think it's (arguably) the more user-friendly unix-esque OS for n00bs.

    Re: comparing linux to windows

    PC-BSD doesn't use Linux at all... But it is fairly easy to use for Windows users. But driver support is even more limited and the PMS isn't as complete as Linux distros are.
