IE7 - Offered as Update - No WGA

IE7 has appeared as an update on my XPMCE2005 system. What's odd here is that I won't have WGA on my systems. It isn't installed. Is this another attempt to get me to install WGA without knowing? IE7 still has a WGA icon on MS's download page.
I use FireFox anyway but I'd probably try IE7 if it didn't need WGA. I'm glad I check before installing updates.
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...

You might actually find that you've got WGA installed without knowing it, for quite a while MS have now advertised it as KB (knowledge base) with just a number.

because a large number of things use the IE activex control internally, and IE7 is more secure?

an IE exploit could affect you if you use steam, for example

Web developers would want both, to see how their work looks etc...

Also .NET developers would need IE if they want to use the ActiveX control for something.

IE is still an essential piece of software for a lot of people.

Re: IE7 - Offered as Update - No WGA

I'm happy with FireFox but I'm curious now that IE has been 'improved.' From my point of view, I stopped using IE when I discovered tabbed browsing.
There's no trace of WGA on my system. I thought it was strange when IE7 appeared as an update. I've got my own reasons for not trusting WGA. My software is actually legitimate. I wondered if this was another case of an attempt to install it by stealth eg. Critical Update!; KBxxxx etc. I hoped MS had seen the light and made it available without spyware.
Incidentally, the recent interview with Darren Strange was enlightening. He was involved in the design of the Office 2007 interface. In this quote, he descibes the information collected by Word and sent to MS over the internet. "We know which commands people use most often, and which ones they don't. We know which commands you use in sequence with each other. We know how many commands you use seven times more with the keyboard rather than the mouse. We know how big your screen is. We know how many times you used Excel maximised or minimized. We know how many documents you have open at one time." [PC Pro 157, November 2007] I wrote to my bank manager using Word. This scares me and it's what MS are happy to admit to collecting. I don't want anyone to know when where or how I use my PC. MS are in direct competition with Google now and consider for a moment a world where MS uses this data in the same way as Google. Turn on your PC at 7.00am and you'll find yourself invited for coffee at the local Starbucks. If a line isn't drawn now what will PC use be like in a couple of years?
A bit of a rant, yes, but I think that at least some of my paranoia is justified.
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...

Re: IE7 - Offered as Update - No WGA

The IE7 download runs a validation check. If it doesn't pass, or you don't let it, then it won't install.

//edit: nevermind, the post above states that's no longer the case.

I wonder if they've seen the light. I thought pigs would fly...
The WGA icon is still there on the download site so I'm going to keep an eye on that for now.

I'm quite happy with IE6, can't see any major reason why I'd need to upgrade to IE7 and quite frankly, I let WGA onto my system ages ago because I actually have a licensed copy of windows

Re: IE7 - Offered as Update - No WGA

Although I don't use IE (blocked by my firewall :-) ) I've had calls from a couple of people who couldn't get IE7 to work on-line.
Uninstalling it and going back to IE6 solved the problem.
If you do 'update' (in the sense of 'updating' to Vista), be sure that you can re-update' to IE6!

IE6 has held back web design in the dark ages, and is secure as a bar of gold left on the high street?
