    Vista or XP

    Hello guys...

My XP is beginning to get on my nerves, definatley needs a re-install, but that got me thinking, should I just upgrade to Vista, and would I get more out of my system for doing so.

The main game I play is counter-strike source, software i use is mirc, flashfxp/ftp-rush, office2k7

What you guys think, anyone running vista on similar system to me (check my spec) and has any probs?

spec- asus p5 deluxe wifi, e6600 (stock), 2gb kingston xtreme, 7800gtx

Biggest problem i've got it creative's crappy soundcard drivers for Vista, so if you don't run one of those then you're fine. Your spec will run it well.

    Re: Vista or XP

There is a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy series Vista Driver 2.12.0002 (38.30 MB) dated 16 Mar 07, so it's obviously compatible - crappy and buggy is a different matter

If you are in no particular rush, I'd wait for SP1 and get a Vista disk with SP1 already rolled up.

    Re: Vista or XP

his machine needs a re-install, and there is no date for Vista SP1, seems a little tough to advise waiting for SP1 when there is no date and his machine is having problems.

not really, just reinstall XP if it's that bad, wait for a Vista SP1 disk to appear. It's all relative, he doesn't need Vista right this second.

    Re: Vista or XP

Yeah I know I don't need Vista right now, but every 3-4 months i end up re-installing XP, and i'm just at a point now where i'm thinking about Vista. 64bit computing seems to be the way forward.

64bit - time for you to start doing serious research and to make sure everything you want to work, hard and software, will in fact, work.

There was a Vista driver out on the 1st of October from Creative.
SP1 won't fix creative's drivers and MS have pretty much said it'll be just a rollup of patches out already (with a few extensions to existing functionality).

Similar sorts of problems as the X-FI - although it does seem people are having degrees of success no (check the creative support forums). I need to spend some time checking out the auzentech drivers (which have been modded to work with creative cards) and the new creative drivers too. Links to both are on the aforementioned forums.

To give you an example: on Vista 64 with 4gig of RAM I boot up and I have five channels of constant static noise. Nice. Found a workaround for this but now I have sound dropouts even in windows apps (let alone games).

    Splash,

What are your thoughts? I'm going to be backing everything up tonight, and carefully reviewing everything before making a decision.

i have a feeling either way, you will be reinstalling your XP (32/64) or Vista (32/64) anyways

I think at this moment in time, no you won't get more out of your system going to Vista. Vista looks nice, has good media centre stuff and is much more user friendly for someone not used to computers or who has tried a mac before. There's no big reason *not* to get Vista, but I don't think you're the type of user who's going to get anything more by doing so.
