    Looking for Office '07

hiya. i currently have OpenOffice 2.3. while it's free and as good as MS Office i noticed when opening your documents on an internet cafe (which has it's own OOffice) the said document opened "dodgy" and the fonts changes, etc. now im thinking of buying Microsoft's. would you recommend buying the whole Office 2007 package or just the Word since i'll be using it more often?

OOo does deal with formatting slightly different to MS Office, but given the massive market dominance that MS Office has you'd have to be crazy to send out anything (your CV for instance) saved in OOo's equivalent of Word.

MS Office Home And Student Edition is available for a shade under £100, for which you get Word, Excel and Powerpoint and a license for installation on up to 3 machines.

£80ish for the Home And Student Edition. One Note is bundled too

    Office 2007
    Possibly cheaper elsewhere?

    about £40 if you're a real student - http://www.theultimatesteal.co.uk/

try to consider what & how you save though - if you use fonts that aren't at both ends, regardless of version, things will go wrong. and i've seen endless examples of tiny differences in layout and spacing between msoffice versions

    I've only just noticed this:

    Recommended Memory Requirements 2000MB
2GB of Ram for an Office program, what has the world come to!!

Surely that price is a typo though?

because it's an OPK - OEM Preinstallation Kit

it includes tools required to make a slightly custom version of Word 2007, for rolling out across an enterprise. Doesn't include Word itself.

I have an XP OPK somewhere

    Re: Looking for Office '07

i saved my CV using OOo and i fear that if i apply for work elsewhere (after sending that OOo-saved CV) there is a possibility that will not be able to read my file, isn't it?

ill be using Office mainly for Word documents like CV's, emails, personal letters, etc.

so, would it be....Office or just the Word?

The simplest (and free-est) option in your situation would be to export your CV as a pdf. It's generally good practice to do this as a matter of course anyway, as youre then guaranteed the reader sees it exactly as you intend.

    Re: Looking for Office '07

I'd imagine the most widely recognised format would be .txt or RTF

    To export your CV as a PDF;

In OOo click File > Export as PDF.

It really isn't any easier than that.
    |Kata: "Read title as 'fisting'. Not sure why I clicked. Relieved, really."|
    |TAKTAK: "It was so small that mine wouldn't fit into it"|

that depends on a few factors

    1) the other end needs to be running the same version of msoffice or higher. this can be true or false

    2) if you go through an agency, they WILL butcher your cv before passing it on to employers. PDFs are immutable, so always look the same at both ends whilst word docs may get changed by middle men

    3) despite popular opinion, word does *not* guarantee looking the same at both ends
