    XP SP2 will not fully boot

    p4 2.66 1gb XP SP2 9800pro

    My machine gets to the XP splash/loading screen and a few bars scroll across before it restarts the system. It doesn't matter whether it's in safe mode or not, I still get the same. Restore last working setup does nothing.

    I've got Ubuntu 7.04 on the same machine (same hard drive) and that runs fine, I've had a look round the hard drive via Linux and I am not seeing any read errors. I did a memory test and everything seems find there.

    I've got Beryl running and everything is fine, so I assume this isn't a graphics card issue.

    I went to run a repair install from my XP cd (SP2 version I downloaded when a student) and the option isn't there. (would rather not reinstall at this time if at all possible). EDIT: I do not get access to the recovery console either, is it possible to 'fixboot' another way?

    Anyone had anything similar? How'd you sort it out?

    Cheers!

    (googling has proven difficult)

    You can try disabling the automatic restart so you get the blue screen of death instead. That should show a stop error code.....may give you a bit more info to try and repair your install without the need to reinstall.

    Keep pressing F8 after the bios post screen and the option should appear on the boot menu.

    Cheers NC, alas I didn't see that option on the boot screen so I had to format and start again. I was unaware of the auto restart option so I'll be sure to disable that from within windows now Cheers

    If your in windows, then it's easy to set this feature, and you may as well do it before another similar problem appears;

    Right click 'my computer, click properties, 'Advanced', chose 'Setting' from Startup & recovery, then under 'Systen failure' untick the 'Automatically restart' box, chose 'OK'.

    You may have to restart for it to take effect.
